T O E G Ll P.
sPEcIFIcA'rIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,856, dated November 29, 1898. Application filed May 17,1897. $erial No. 636,900. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may cancer/1,.-
Be it known that I, WILBUR E. GnRoW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburg, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toe-Clips, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to toe-clips for the pedals of bicycles and similar vehicles and to means for holding the pedal in such position at all times that the toe-clip will be directed upwardly and in proper position to receive the toe of the foot; and the object of the invention is to provide improved devices for this purpose which are simple in construction and operation and adapted to be secured to an ordinary pedal.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a pedal, showing my improvement connected therewith and showing also a part of the pedalcrank; Fig. 2, a bottom plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 a front view looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts are indicated by the same numerals of reference throughout the several views, and I have shown in said drawings a part of the pedal-crank 5 and a pedal 6 of the usual construction. The pedal (5 is mounted on a shaft connected with the pedal-crank 5, the head of which is shown at 7, and said shaft is provided at its opposite end with a nut or bur 8, and in practice I secure to one side of the pedal and centrally thereof a toe-clip 9, which is yoke-shaped in form and the upper arm of which projects upwardly, as shown at 10, and the lower arm thereof is provided with a downwardly-directed extension 11, which is formed at right angles thereto and which is provided with a vertical slot 12, through which passes a bolt 13, which also passes through the side 14 of the pedal. The central portion of the bolt 13 is flat in form, so that the extension 11 of the toe-clip will not turn thereon, and said bolt is provided with a head '15 and a nut or bur 16.
I also provide a counterbalance which consists of a plate or arm 17, which is provided at one end with an upwardly-directed extension 18, which is formed thereon at right angles thereto and through which the bolt 13 passes, and the extension 11 of the toe-clip is on the outer side of the side 14 of the pedal, and the extension 18 of the plate or arm 17 of the counterbalance is on the inner side, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and the opposite end of the plate or arm-17 of the counterbalance projects backwardly beneath the pedal and is provided with a counterbalance-weight 19, which is provided with a screwthreaded shank 20, which is adapted to be passed through either one of a number of holes or openings 21, which are formed in and longitudinally of the plate or arm 17, and the object of these holes or openings 21 is to provide means for adjusting the position of the counterbalance-weight 19.
By means of this device the pedal 6 may be held in the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position the toe-clip will also be held as shown in said figure, and the toe of the shoe may be securely and easily inserted within said clip, as will be readily understood.
The toe-clip may be made of any desired material, but I prefer to make the same of thin spring metal and to form thereon a strengthening rim or flange 2.2; but my invention is not limited to the material of which the same is composed, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improvement in toe-clips of the class described, the combination, with a right-angular plate embodying an upright front extension adapted to be secured against the rear face of the front portion of a bicyclepedal and a rearwardly-projecting horizontal arm adapted to extend beneath the pedal, said front extension being provided with a vertical slot and the rear end portion of said horizontal arm being provided with a series of openings in a longitudinal plane, of a clip having a downwardly-projecting rear extension adapted to fit against the front face of the front portion of the bicycle-pedal and providedwith a vertical slot, means for conjointly securing the front extension of the bar or plate and the rear extension of the clip in said relative positions with respect to the front portion of the pedal, said means 'elnbodying a bolt passing through the slots of said members, whereby the front portion of the pedal will be clamped between said front extension of the bar or plate and the rear downwardly-projecting extension of the clip and the device is adapted for connection to different-sized pedals, and a depending Weight WILBUR E. GEROV.
