wAsumaYpN. D- Q UNITE ARTHUR ROGERS, OF BARNESVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE WATT MINING OAR WHEEL COMPANY AND T. & A. ROGERS, OF SAME PLACE.
SLED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,123, dated January 2, 1894.
Application filed January 24:, 1893. Renewed November 13, 1893. Serial No. 490,8. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR ROGERS, of Barnesville, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in OoastingorBob Sleds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to coasting or bobsleds and the special object I have in view, is to provide means whereby the rider may have easy and perfect control of the steering apparatus, and thus determine at will the curves he wishes to make, or the course he desires to take, without the slightest danger of upsetting by reason of a too abrupt change of direction.
Referring to the drawings by letters of referencez-Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section through the line :rx Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of my bob-sled, and Fig. 4 a modification of the steering apparatus.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures.
My sled is composed of two pairs of runners A, A, the rear runners being firmly secured to the board B, in any well known manner. To the under side of this board, near its forward end, is secured bolster O, the outer side of which is rounded or convexed and provided with semi circular notches a, (1. Through the center of this bolster is a bolt hole as indicated in Fig. 2. The forward ends of runners A, project beyond the end of board B, and are furnished with steering bar D, which may be manipulated either by the feet or hands of the rider.
I E represents a cross piece uniting the front runners but should extend a little above the top edges thereof in order that the board B, may not contact therewith, as fully shown in Fig. 1.
a, a, are semi-circular notches in. cross piece E, and b, b, are pins resting and secured therein. The cross piece has also a central bolt hole, registering with the similar hole in bolster O.
c is a retaining bolt headed at one end, and screw threaded at the other.
01 represents a spiral spring which encircles the bolt and e a nut for holding the bolt in place and tensioning the spring.
It will be observed that when the parts are properly adjusted as shown in the drawings, the pins b, b, will rest and rock in semi-circular notches a, a, and that the cross piece IE, will be held to the bolster C, only by the com bined action of the bolt, spring and nut, while the front runners will be limited in their movement to the right or left by the bolster, and thus guard against the possibility of upsetting by an abrupt change of direction.
I have shown in Fig. 4 a modification of the construction and arrangement already described which consists. simply in the employment of two bolts and their necessary accompaniments (such as already described) in connection with the cross piece E and bolster O.
The mode of operating my improved sled is so apparent that it needs no explanation thereof, it being only necessary for the rider to place either feet or hands on the steering bar, to enable him to easily guide the sled.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-
1. The combination of the front and rear runners or sleds, the cross piece and bolster lying beside each other and respectively con nected to the front and rear runners, and a spring-controlled connection between the bolster and cross piece whereby they can move or rock horizontally in relation to and against each other, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the runners, the cross piece secured thereto, the bolster lying beside the cross piece, and a horizontal bolt transfixing both bolster and cross piece, and a spring on said bolt for holding the bolster yieldingly against said cross piece, and a second sled connected to said bolster, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the front and rear bolt 0, spring d thereon, pins 1), and sled A, all constructed and arranged substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 15 my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR ROGERS.
