Gktoowws UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELZY RIGGS, OF MONONGALIA COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA.
WAGON-TONGUE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELZY RIGGS. a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Monongalia, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVagon-Tongues; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in draft devices for wagons, and particularly to tongues or poles thereof.
The particular object of the invention is to provide a tongue for a wagon and so mount the same that should the wagon turn over, the horses would not be thrown.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents the front axle of the vehicle, and 11 the bolster thereof, between which is clamped the hound 12, the ends of said hound extending forwardly of said axle. Secured between the ends of the hound and just in advance of the axle is a brace bar 13, this bar having a central opening 14:. Vertically disposed and pivotally carried by the forward extremities of the ends of the hound is a block 15, this block being formed of two pieces bolted together, and a vertical elongated opening 16 therein. A metal bifurcated member 17 is provided Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 770,471.
with a reduced threaded extension 18 which is disposed through the opening in the brace 13 and carries a retaining nut 19. Between the lugs 20 of the bifurcated member is bolted a tongue 21, both the tongue and the forward ends of the bifurcated member extending through the opening 16 of the block 15. The opening 16 is of such width that the tongue and bifurcated member can freely rotate therein, and will slide vertically. The brace also pivotally mounted in the ends of the hound.
From the foregoing, it will readily be seen that should the vehicle turn over, the pole and bifurcated member will freely rotate within the brace 13 and opening 16 so that the horses attached to the pole will not be thrown. By pivotally mounting the brace 13, the pole is permitted to swing vertically in the opening 16 of the block 15.
lVhat is claimed is:
The combination with the hound of a Vehicle, of a pivotally mounted transverse brace carried thereby, a block pivotally carried by the hound and formed with a vertically arranged elongated opening, a bifurcated member rotatably carried by the said brace, a draft pole secured between the bifurcated member, said bifurcated member and pole extending through the opening of said block, and arranged for vertical sliding movement and rotary movement therein.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
ELZY RIGGS.
