HOLDER FOR PACKING-BOXES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NETTIE C. LYND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oregon City, in the county of Olackamas and State of Oregon, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Packing-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in holders for packing-boxes, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a holder for packing-boxes such as boxes or crates used in packing oranges, grape fruit, or other fruit which will obviate the necessity of lifting the box and turning it around during the packing operation.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device, of the type described above, having means for permitting the easy movement of the box out of the way when packed.
A further object of my invention is to provide means by which the box may be reversed, end for end, and locked in its reversed position.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the device, Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, Fig. 3 is a section along the line 33 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 4 is a section of a portion of the device along the line 44 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out my invention I make use of a bench, table, or other similar support having, preferably, an inclined top 1. Pivotally secured to the top, by means of a bolt 2, is a frame consisting of a bottom portion 3, through which the bolt 2 passes, side members 4 and 5, end members 6, cross members 7, and brace rods 8. A series of transverse rods 9 bear rollers 10 which are disposed between the side members 4 and 5. Each of the side members is provided with anti-friction rollers 11.
On the under side of the bottom portion 3 is a plate 3 which is secured to the member 3 by screws, or in any suitable manner. This plate has a bearing portion 3 arranged Specification of Letters Patent. Applicationfiled June 13, 1913:
turning the box end Patented Feb. 3,1914. Serial No. 773,450.
to engage a bearing portion 1 on a plate 1 secured to the top of the bench or table 1. The pivotal bearing thus formed will permit the ready rotation of the box-carrying frame, but when the latter contains a box which is loaded at one end and not at the other there is a tendency for one end of the carrier to tilt. In order to obviate this tendency to tilt and at the same time to provide anti-friction means of supporting the carrier or frame I attach hemispherical gliders such as those shown at 12 to the bottom portion 3.
A rod 13 is pivotally mounted on the side members 4 and 5 in sleeves 14 which are secured to the edges of the side members as shownin Fig. 2. One end of this rod is bent as shown atl3 and the other end is looped to form a handle 13 As will be seen from Fig. 1 there is a similar rod 13 at the opposite end of the frame having a bent portion 13 at one end and a handle 13 at the other, the handles l3 and 13 being on opposite sides of the frame.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation there of may be readily understood.
In the packing of fruit such as oranges the benches or tables upon which the pack ing-boxes rest are placed close to the bin. It is usually'the custom to fill one end of the box or crate then to lift the box and reverse it so as to bring; the empty end next to the bin. This end of the box is then filled and afterward the box removed. This involves a considerable amount of lifting and causes a considerable strain on the packer. In the device which forms the subject of the present invention the holder or carrier is placed next to the bin and the box is inserted between the sides 4 and 5. Packing may now proceed and when one end of the box is filled the box holder or carrier is revolved by means of the handle 13, thereby for end. The handle 13 isthen rotated on its own axis, so as to bring the extension 13 in such position as to engage one edge of the bench or table. This holds the carrier or box frame in position while the box is being packed. When the packing is finished the box is easily removed from the carrier or holder by sliding it out of the open end. The bottom rollers reduces the friction and the side rollers are provided for preventing the binding of the box, on the sides. As stated before, the
gliders 12 which are some distance from the pivotal member 2, keep the bottom of the carrier parallel with the top of the bench or table. This prevents a binding effect on the pivot 2, thus making the carrier easy to turn at all times.
It will be noted that the handle l3 serves not only for turning the box carrier on its pivot, but also as a means of locking the carrier in position, thus doing away with an additional locking member.
I claim 1. The combination with a support, of a f 111113 pivotally mounted thereon. said frame having, parallel side members, anti-friction rollers disposed transversely of said side members, gliders carried by the bottom of he frame and arranged to bear on the support, a handle at each end of the frame for swinging the frame on its pivotal support, and a locking device operated by the handle and arranged to engage the support for locking the frame in position.
2. The combination with an inclined support, of a frame disposed above the support,
a central pivot bolt arranged to pass through the bottom of the frame and the top of the support, gliders carried by the bottom of the frame and ar 'anged to engage the top of the support for maintaining the bottom of the frame parallel with the top of the support, anti-friction rollers disposed within the frame and constituting a support for a packing-box, side rollers carried by the frame for preventing the binding of the packirigbos: on the sides of the frame, a rod rotatably carried by the frame near each end thereof, one end of each of said rods being bent downwardly and arranged to engage the edge of the support for locking; the frame in position, and the other end of the rod being formed into a loop, said 100p constituting a handle for rotating the frame on its pivot and for rotating the rod in its bearings to bring the downwardly bent end into engagement with the support.
