PETER MEYERS, OF STOU'ISVILLE, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 87 ,059, dated February 16, 1869.
IMPROVED BAG-HOLDER.
. The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the m Be i known that I, Pn'mnMnYEns, of Stoutsville, in the county of Fairfield, and State of Ohio, have inie'nted a new and useful Improvement in Bag-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this, specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, and
Figure 2 is a top view of the same.
Corresponding letters refer to corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to devices for holding bags in position while they are being filled with grain or other substances; and
- It consists in combining, with a suitable standard, a
weighted lever, which has attached to its lighter end strips of metal, so arranged that a bag maybe placed thereon, and held with its mouth open, while the same is being filled.
A, in the drawings, represents a standard, which may rest upon legs or supports of iron, or it may be supported bybeing mortised into a base of wood.
Extending from the top of standard A, to near the bottom thereof, is a slot, B, formed by cutting away the central portion of. the standard.
O 0 represent notches or grooves, formed within theside of the standard A, in such manner that they will secure and retain therein the pin E, which passes through the lever F, the method of arranging which is clearly shown in fig. 1 of the drawings.
D represents a lever, one end of which is made heavier than the opposite end, the lighter end to be reduced in thickness for the purpose of lightening the same, and also for permitting it to pass into the slot formed in the standard.
To the outer reduced end of this lever, straps ofmetal, F F, are attached, which straps extend outward, at a right angle to the sides of said lever, a distance equal to that which it is desirable to open the mouth of the bag, when they are againcnrved and carried forward on a line with the sides of said lever. 'lhose portions of the straps 1* E, which extend outward and forward, have formed upon their upper edges, spurs or hooks, to which to secure the bag while it is being filled.
E represents a pin, which passes through the lever D, and is made fast therein,- so that when it becomes necessary to raise the lever in the standard A, it is only necessary to' lift the lever and its pin out of the slots in the standard in which it happens to be at the time, and place it in some other-slot, by which movementit is made to accommodate itself to the varying length of bags.
v It'will be seen, upon referring to the drawings, that when a bag or sack is attached to the arms F F, the weight of such bags will have a tendency to depress the outer end of the lever, but that such tendency will be counteracted by the heavier end of lever D, and
*that, as a consequence, the bag will always be held in a vertical position while being filled, and with its mouth open, and that this will be the case whether the bag be partially filled or-eutirely empty.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the notched and slotted standard A, the weighted lever D, and the metallic holdingstraps F F, substantiallyas shown and described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER MEYERS.
