MOE JACOB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEGGING.
Application filed January 29, 1913.
T 0 (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, Mon Jlicon, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to a split lapping legging provided with suitable fastening devices.
The object of the invention is to provide a legging of this character which can be easily closed around the leg and which will aflord full protection against the ingress of snow and rain.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side-elevation of my improved legging, Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2, 2, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail section through the overlapping portion of the legging, drawn on a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, a represents the underlapping portion and a the overlap ping portion of my improved legging, which is made of the usual shape and material. As the legging is mainly to be used in stormy weather, the material of which the same is made is preferably treated with a waterproofing substance, The legging is open at. the outside, the underlapping portion a of the same being provided with a reinforcing steel-wire 1), which is set off at some distance from its edge, while the overlapping portion is likewise provided with a reinforcing wire 5 said reinforcing wires being inclosed by hems formed in the under-lapping and overlapping portions of the legging. The legging is provided at its lower and upper ends with eyelets (Z, (Z also at intermediate points of the overlapping portion 'ith a pair of eyelets (Z while the underlapping portion is provided be tween the eyelets (Z and adjacent to its reinforcing wire with a hook e. A lacing string 7' is attached to the lower eyelet (Z of the under-lapping portion by means of a knot f or otherwise, passed over the reinforcing wires of both underand overlapping portions (1, a and through the eyelet (Z at the lower end of the overlapping portion, then along the under-side of the latter to Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1914.
Serial No. 744,882.
the eyelet (Z at the middle portion of the overlapping portion, then across the reinforcing wires and around the hook e, back again over the reinforcing wires and through the second eyelet (Z then along the under side of the overlapping portion to the uppermost eyelet (Z of the same, then across the reinforcing wires and through the upper eyelet (Z of the underlapping portion, to which it is tied in any suitable manner.
If desired, another pair of eyelets (Z and hook 6 may be employed at intermediate points between the lower and upper ends of the legging, especially for extra large sizes of leggings. For ordinary smaller sizes one pair of eyelets (Z and hook e are sufficient.
hen it is desired to put the legging over the foot and on the leg of the wearer, the lacing string f is untied at the upper end, the middle portion of the lacing string removed from the hook and the lower portion of the legging extended sufficiently apart so as to permit the foot to be passed through the logging, the underlapping portion remaining under the stiffening rib o' the overlapping portion; when the lacing string is tightened by pulling the same in upward direction over the eyelets and placing the same over the hook c, after which the upper end of the string is tied to the eyelet (Z at the upper end of the underlapping portion, as shown in Fig. 1. hen the lacing string is drawn the stiffening edge rib of the overlapping portion or flap slides over the underlying portion or flap into abutting contact wit-h the offset stiffening rib of the underlying flap. The underlying flap thus serves as a guide to bring the stiffening ribs in abutting contact and to hold them in that position. The abutting ribs operate jointly with the spaced lacing devices to hold the flaps closed along the Spaces between the lacing connections, whereby a multiplicity of eyelets or fastenings is avoided. The abutting stiffening ribs in connection with the underlying flap effect and maintain a complete closing of the legging so that no particle of snow or rain can enter into or settle below the lapping portions thereof.
lf claim:
A split legging having lapping flaps, the overlapping flap being provided with a stiffening rib at its edge and the underlapping flap passing under said stiffening rib iSO and being itself provided with a stiffening as my invention, I have signed my name in rib ofiset from its edge, and fastening depresence of two subscribing Witnesses.
vices arranged to draw the ed 'e rib of the overlapping flap over said iinderlapping JACOB 5 flap and into abutting contact with said ofi- Witnesses:
set rib of the underlapping flap. PAUL GoEPEL,
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing J OHN MURTAGH.
