REINFORCEID SHOE-FLY.
Application filed January 31, 1914.
To all cli/0m t may concern.'
Be it. known that I, Bassin MnNDnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merrill, in the county of Lincoln and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reinforced Shoe-Flies, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to reinforcing devices, and particularly to reinforcing devices for the button-holes of shoes or the like; and it has for its primary'object the provision of a single length of flexible or pliable material that may be interposed between the folds of that flap of the shoe in which the buttonholes are formed. and which will extend the entire length of the flap and arranged relatively of the outer ends of the button holes so as to positively prevent the same from tearing out or becoming unduly enlarged.
Another obj ect of the invention is the provision of reinforcing means which will be applicable to the shoe upper of the ordinary well known form and which will possess such inherent qualities that will permit the' upper to be neatly and uniformly applied against the foot of the wearer.
1lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side view of a portion of a shoe flap, showing the application of the reinforcing means thereto; Fig. 2 is a section talren on line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. l; and Fig. a is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. l.

diately beyond the outer end of the buttonholes 4r. Above the upper hole the material or wire is bent laterally, as at 5, so as to eX- tend. approximately for the full width of' the flap, and it is then folded on itself to provide an upper lateral branch At the opposite end, the main lead or branch 3 is folded on itself to provide a relatively short auxiliary reinforcing member 7, which may be arranged between the rows of stitching 2 herein shown. The portion 6 may also be arranged between said rows of stitching 2 at the top of the flap and in this manner the device is securely held in position between the companion layers or folds of the flap without resorting to a foreign fastener, as will be appreciated. As thus arranged7 the device while strengthening the button holes serves additionally as a means to hold the flap of the uppers in a neat and uniform condition while it positively serves to reinforce all of the button-holes and to prevent the same from tearing in the direction of the free marginal edge of the flap.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
I claim In a shoe, a fly comprising layers of material., and outer and inner hem stitches spaced from one edge thereof, said fiy having buttonholes spaced from the inner side of the inner hemstitches, and a reinforcing device comprising a single length of pliable wire arranged between said layers and between said inner hem-stitches and the buttonholes, the ends of said reinforcing wire being doubled and arranged with their terminals between the inner and outer hem-stitches.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BESSIE MENDELSON.
