Description

A. M. KENNEDY.-
SHOE LACE FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 3, 1912.
I Patented Mar.4,1913.
WITNESSES I ENVEYFDR #XTTORNEYS Be it known that I, ARTHUR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR M. KENNEDY, or PHILADELPHIA, IEENItSYLVANIA.
SHOE-LACE FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 3, 1912. Serial N 0. 718,174.
of construction, all as willbe hereinafter fully set forth. v The annexed drawingsand the following description set forth in detail one mechanical form embodying the invention, such detail construction being but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may b used.
In saidannexed drawingsFigure 1 represents a front view of a shoe provided with my improved lace fasteners, showing the same open and the lace untied. Fig. 2 represents a front view of the-=; upper of the cured on opposite sides of the slit in the top,
shoe with the, lace tied and secured in the fastener. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged sec-- tional view of the fastener. Fig. 4 repre sents a perspective view of the fastener.
Siniilar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the-figures.
- Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the top of a shoe, having the usual lace-hooks, 2. Two base-plates, 3, are se- -in-place of the uppermost hooks, and are preferably secured by means of'eyelets or rivets,' l. Saidbase-plates are preferably manner.
rectangular and have each an outturned flange, 5, at its upper edge, A coveringplate, 6,-islnnged-.at its.lower edge to the lower edge of the base-plate, and has an inturned locking-flange, 7, at its free upper edge, ,which engages over the out-turned flange, and looks upon the same. A lacehook, 8, is provided upon the covering-plate, but may be omitted. I
In. practice, the shoe-lace, 9, is laced through the eyelets and hooks in the usual The lace is hooked around the I hooks upon the covering plates at the top of.
nary bow-knot, whereupon the loops, 10, of such knot are placed within the' fasteners and secured by the locking-plates the flanges of which engage the flanges of the baseplat-es. The loops will thus be secured by the clamps, and the lace engagingthe hooks upon the locking-platsqwill assist in'holding said plates locked. VVhen the locking plates are tilted upwardgto clamp the loops, the laces passing around the hooks are [drawn upward and tightened, so that any.
slack in the lacing is taken up and tension placed upon the hooks and plates to keep the latter in their locking position. The wide flanges upon the upper edges of the rectangular baselate and covering -plate in each fastener rictionallyengaging each other, provide secure locking of the covering-plate and, keep the latter true in its relation to the base-plate.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention maybe. employed for the mode Patented Mar. 4,1-9 1 3.
I the shoe, and is thereupon tled in the ordiherein explained. Change may.theref ore be made as regards the mechanism thus disclosed, provided the principles of construction-set forth,- respectively, in the following claims. are-employed.
f Having thus described my invention, what I'claim' as new and desire to secure by Let.- ters Patent, is 3 1. A shoelace fastener comprising ;a rectangular base-plate adapted to be secured to the top of the shoe and formed with a Wide flange at its outer edge, a rectangular covering plate hinged to saidbase-plate and formed with awide flange adapted to engage the flange upon the base-plate and a laterally extending lacing-hook upon the outer face of said covering, plate.
2. In combination with a shoe-top and lace, a pair of fasteners secured upon opposite sides of the opening in the shoe-top and each consisting of-a base-plate secured to the top and having a. flange and a locking-plate hinged to said base-plate and formed with a flange engagingsaid' former flange and with a laterally extendinglacinghook upon its outer face, the shoelace being brought around said hooks and tied in a bow-knot and the loops of the latter being each clamped by a locking-plate.
3. In combinaticn with a shoe-top and flange upon the latter and a laterally exlace, a pairf of fasteners secured Illlpon 0pp0-. tending lacing-hook upon its outer. face. site sides 0 the opening in the s 0e-t0p and a each consisting of-n base-plate secured to ARTHUR KENNEDY 5 the top and having; flange at its upper Witnesses: s
edge, and a locking-plate hinged to said FREDERICK H. CUMMING,- base-plate and having a flange engaging the GEO. J. LINCOLN, Jr.
