WIIJHEIIM BODLAENDER, OF BERLIN-HALENSEE, GERMANY.
PAPER-FILE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 28, 1913.
Patented Jan. 20, 1914. Serial No. 770,465.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILHELM BODLAENDER, a citizen of the Empire of Germany, residing at Karlsruherstrasse 8, Berlin-Halensee, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Files, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in paper files in which the sheets of paper are not punched but held by the clamping action of a pressure member.
The object of the improvements is to provide a paper file of this class which is simple in construction and reliable in operation.
With this object in View my invention consists in providing on the inner side of the file wrapper a hinged elastic bail provided with comparatively short side arms and made integral with an operating arm, which is adapted to be locked in closing position by engaging below a locking nose, the said elastic bail clamping the sheets of paper by engaging the same at the rear of a clamping edge located below the sheets and in front of the bail. The ressure which is thus exerted by the locklng arm cooperates with the elasticity of the bail in such a way, that a reliable clamping action is produced with a full file as well as with a file which contains a small number of sheets.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts.
In said drawin Figure 1, is a plan view of the open file, Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section of the clamping mechanism of the file taken with the cover or wrapper removed, and Fig. 3, is a cross-section taken on the line BB of Fig. 1 with the cover removed.
To the inner side of the wrapper a a strip of sheet metal 7) is secured which is bent upward at its outer end so as to produce an upturned clampin edge 0. To the said strip a ocket d o U-shaped section is secured, w ich is adapted to receive the sheets of paper at the inner margins thereof. To the upper and lower ends of the strip 1) metal strips 6 and f are secured which at their inner ends are bent into the form of eyes providing hinge bearings for a bail g. The side arms 72, of the said bail are com- 5 paratively short, and they are so long, that in the clamping position the bail acts on the sheets of paper at the rear of the clamping edge 0. The end of the bail which is supported in the strip 6 has an extension or arm is which is bent at. a right angle and is formed at its end with a finger piece 2', so that when depressing the arm 70 at its end i the whole length of the arm 70 operates by its leverage to press the bail g on the pocket or the papers placed therein. The bail g is curved downward, and by its elasticity it is bent in such a way that it engages the sheets over the whole length of the same with uniform pressure, and that its clamping action is effective even in case the pile of paper is but small. The strip e is provided with an upturned portion Z formed with a nose m which is engaged by the arm 75 when depressin the same. When being thus depressed the said arm slides downward on the inclined upper edge of the nose, and it is bent laterally, so that it engages by spring action below the nose.
In Fig. 3 the full lines show the bail in its clamping position, while the dotted lines show the same in its open position in which the sheets of paper are released.
Fig. 2 shows the bail in the position in which it is in contact with the sheets of paper but is not yet pressed thereon and bent into straight form.
In Fig. l the bail is shown in its clamping position.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. In a paper file, the combination with a foundation providing a support for the sheets of paper, of an elastic bail curved toward the support and hinged thereto, an operating arm for said bail, and means to lock said arm in clamping position.
2. In a paper file, the combination with a foundation providing a support for the sheets of paper, of a strip on said support formed with an upturned clamping edge, an elastic bail curved toward the support and hinged thereto, an operating arm for said bail, and means to lock said arm in clamping position.
3. In a paper file, the combination with a foundation providing a support for the sheets of paper, of a strip 011 said support formed with an upturned clamping edge, an elastic bail curved toward the support and hinged thereto and extending with its clamping part at the rear of the clamping edge, an operating arm for said bail, and nose provided on the support and located 10 means to look said arm in clamping posiposition for looking engagement with sald tion. arm.
