WITNESSES ATTORNEYS COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH CQ-IW'ASHINGTON, n C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. OVERBIECK, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
EXTENSION-INDEX AND FOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. OVER- BECK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Extension-Index and Folder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in folders or extension index files, and has for an object to provide an improved folding back structure which will hold the front and greater number of letters or other matter to be filed.
In carrying out the objects of the invention, backs or front and back leaves are pro vided of any desired construction and in which are secured pairs of pivotally mounted links. These links are pivotally connected together and also pivotally connected to fastening means connected with the front and back covers so that as additional matter is placed between the front and back covers the connecting links will gradually move for permitting this extension of the folder.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying draw ings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention shown partially expanded; Fig. 2 is a rear edge view of the structure shown in Fig 1, the same being shown partially closed or collapsed in dotted lines; Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 2 approximately on line 3-3, certain parts being broken away; Fig. 1 is a detail eleva tion of one corner of the folder, certain parts being shown in section for better illustrating the construction; Fig. 5 is a section through Fig. 4 on the line 5-5; Fig. 6 is an elevation of a slightly modified form of clamp or securing means for the pivotally mounted links forming certain features of the in- Specification of Letters Patent.

v ention, the same being shown in connection with part of one of the covers; and Fig. 7 is a section through Fig. 6 on the line Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 and 2 indicate the covers of an index or folder which is adapted to receive letters or other matter to be filed. These covers are connected by pivotally mounted links 3 and 1 pivotally connected together at 5 and pivotally connected at 6 and 7 to extensions 8 and 9 projecting through clamps 10 and 11. The clamps 10 and 11 are formed from a strip of metal substantially U-shape in cross section, as shown more in detail in Fig. 5/ The inner edges 12 of these U-shaped clamps 10 and 11 are pressed tightly against the respective backs, while the outer edges are also pressed tightly against the backs but are provided with spurs 13 which project through the respective backs and are bent over as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. By providing substantially U-shaped clamps 10 and 11 the covers 1 and 2 are reinforced to an appreciable extent in order that the same may not be torn even though made from comparatively soft paper.
If desired, clamps 10 and 11 could be eliminated and a slightly modified form of clamp 14 (Figs. 6 and 7) could be used. This clamp is formed with an extension 15 to which the respective hinges are pivoted and with a body portion 16 and a plurality of spurs 17 designed to extend from the body 16 through the walls of the covers and then be bent over or clamped down tight against the covers. This form of clamp is sometimes desirable and operates successfully where the covers are not fragile or weak.
In a device embodying the invention a simple and strong expansible folder or cover index device is provided which may be easily inserted and removed in a vertical filing cabinet without in any way disturbing the other matter in the cabinet. It will also be evident that letters or other matter in the index or folder may be varied in amount without in any way disturbing any of the other folders in the same drawer of the cabinet. If desired, an index slide 18 could be provided on one of the covers for receiving index cards whereby the entire index or folder could be inserted and removed from a filing cabinet as a single article or a single letter.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the character described, a pair of covers, a pair of stifi'ening clamps engaging the rear edge of said covers formed With overlapping bracing members and a plurality of extensions, a link pivotally connected to each of said extensions, and means for pivotally connecting said links together in pairs whereby the backs of said covers are expansibly connected together.
2. In a device of the character described, a pair of covers, a pair of stiffening clamps engaging the rear edge of said covers formed with overlapping bracing members, a plurality of extensions, and a plurality of spur cleats extending through said covers and bent over or clenched on the opposite side,
a link pivotally connected to each of said extensions, and means for connecting the said links together in pairs whereby the backs of said covers are expansibly connected together.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
