Be it known that l, JOHN B. CONRAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nicolaus, in the county of Sutter and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hat holders and more particularly to folding, portable hat holders, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be folded into compact form and which will hold the hat against loss or displacement, supported either upon the garment `of the wearer or upon a hook. rlhe construction is such that the hat cannot be removed therefrom Without first unlocking' the catch which holds the device in operative position, thereby preventing mistakes in getting the wrong hat.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a simple and eliicient device of this character which may be folded into small compass and carried in the pocket and which may be either supported on the garment of the owner of the hat or upon any suitable type of hook.

Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which:

Referring more particularly to the draw ing, 1 and 2 represent the separated sections of the device, the section 1 being constructed of a single piece of material having side flanges 3 which are broadened out into pivoting lingers 4L at one end. The opposite end of the section 1 is free of the flanges and has its extended end bent back upon itself in the form of a retaining spring 5 which is adapted to engage the hat beneath the body and the sweat band. with reinforcing side flanges 6, a portion of which is bent back upon the body of the secn tion and the remaining portion of which is inwardly extending so as to form undercut walls or a dove-tailed groove 7 in which the locking plate S is adapted to slide. This locking plate is apertured, as shown at 9. and the aperture 9 corresponds and registers with a similar aperture 10 formed in the section 2, both of which are adapted to receive and permit the passage of a hoolr 1l formed on the end of the section 1 between the pivoting ears ll. lVhen this hook has been passed through the apertures 9 and l0 the latching plate is moved upwardly so that one wall of the aperture 9 will engage beneath the hook and thereby hold the sections in right-angular position, as shown.

rlhe upper end of the section 2 has secured thereto a ring 12 for supporting the device upon a hook, nail or other similar support and also secured at this end by means of a flexible member 13 is a retaining bar 11i which may be placed through the button hole of the vest or coat so as to support the device upon the garment of the wearer.

It will be noticed that when the sections are held in right-angular position that the hat cannot be removed from the section 1 until the latching plate S has been released from the hook and both sections are in alined or folded position.

`What l claim is 1. A hat holder comprising hingedly con nected sections adapted to aline one with the other, a band engaging spring carried by and parallel with one of the sections and means to lock the other section at right angles to the section carrying the spring.

2. A hat holder comprising hingedly connected sections adapted to fold one upon the other or to aline, a sweat band engaging spring carried by one of the sections and parallel therewith, a slidably mounted loclring plate carried by the other section, a hook on the lirst section adapted to be engaged by the plate to lock the sections in right-angular position and a plurality of supporting devices carried by the last-named section.
