- FREDERICK BROOK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF '10 WEST PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
REINFORCED PAPER-BOARD BRO'I'ECTII TE FOLDER OR CARTON.
Patented Jan. 1914.
Application filed January 7, 1913. Serial No. 740,577.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK BROGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reinforced Paper-Board Protective Folders or Cartons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to the manufacture from a blank composed of pasteboard or the like, with or without an insort, but reinforced with wires projecting from the sides, a folder or carton in which the extending wires form end means for contents of such folder or carton, in use, particularly as a parcel post package among other adapted uses therefor; and in the above defined relation of my said invention, it consists generally of the constructive arrangement of such a folder or carton.
The nature and scope of my present invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1, is a top or lan view, partly in section, of a flexible reinforced paper-board blank arranged to be formed into a folder or carton, having wires extending beyond the sides of the same to form end protective means for contents of such folder or carton, in use, embodying main features of my present invention. Fig. 2, is a cross-section through the blank on the line ww, of Fig. 1, showing one form of my said invention. Fig. 3, is a top or plan View, partly in section, of a modified arrangement of the blank to form a folder or carton, provided with a corrugated insert having Wires in relation therewith and with the face and back of the blank, and the wires extending beprotecting yond the sides to provide end protective means for the folder or carton. Fig. 4, is a cross-section on the line y of Fig. 3. ig. 5, is a perspective view of the reinforced blank formed into a circular folder, having extending wires bent lnto a position to protect the contents of such a package; and Fig. 6, is a similar view of another form of the folderor carton, for other defined purposes, having end adjusting protecting wire means for the contents thereof.
Referring to the drawings a, is the blank of paste-board or the like. This blank may be of a single thickness, asin Fig. 2, or of two thicknesses, as in Fig. 4.
b, is a ribbed or corrugated insert of flexible material secured between the two thicknesses of the blank a. Preferably about the points of contact of the ribbed or corrugated insert 6, with the two thicknesses of the blank a, as in Fig. 4, are introduced wires 03 and (Z and in such manner as to project beyond the sides of the said blank, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, in order that when the blank is in either form, as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the end extending wires may be bent so as to overlap onto each other, to thereby provide a central strengthened end protective means for contents. of such a folder or carton in shipping or sending by parcel post. The wires can be either woven into the flexible board during formation of the blank, or secured by fastening means to become a part of the ribbed or corrugated insert Z), of the blank of Figs. 3 and 4.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A folder, consisting of a sheet of double faced corrugated board and wires located along the line of contact between the corrugated and the facing sheets and extending beyond the sides, said folder being adapted to be wrapped about an article with the wires extending longitudinally thereof and with said extensions tied together at the ends of the package.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto setmy signature in the presence of the two'subscribing witnesses hereto.
FREDERICK BROCK. Witnesses J. WALTER DoueLAss, THOMAS M. SMIT
