EGG-WRAPPER.
masses.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1915.
Application filed December 21, 1911. Serial No. 667,197.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES F. J ONES and Lur P. Rnxrono, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg- Wrappers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Our invention relates to wrappers in which eggs may be inclosed individually for transportation, thereby making it possible to place the eggs in any suitable containerwithout the necessity of resorting to the use of cell fillers, such as used in egg cases, the present wrapper being one more particularly intended to be used by poultry fanciers in the transportation of said eggs, or by retail grocers in the delivery of a small number of eggs to their customers.
Figure I is a perspective view of the wrapper as it appears with an egg therein. Fig. II is a top or plan view of the wrapper. Fig. III is a perspective view of the wrapper shown in Fig. II as it appears when folded.
The main element of our wrapper is a strip 1 of corrugated paper so cut as to provide a series of V-shaped laterally extending tongues 2 at each side of the strip, said tongues being adapted to bend inwardly so that their side edges will touch and their points will meet at a common center when the strip is wrapped circumferentially around an egg The corrugations of the strip 1 extend-longitudinally of the strip, and said strip is scored transversely as seen at 3 for the purpose of mashing the corrugations in order that the strip may be readily bent around an egg.
l designates an outer wrapper sheet to which the main corrugated strip 1 is preferably aifixed. This outer wrapper sheet is preferably thin paper of greater breadth and length than the corrugated strip. Ihe
outer sheet l is preferably supplied with a sealing flap 5.
In the use of our wrapper an egg is placed Copies of this patent may be obtained for upon the sheet 1 which is wrapped around the egg, the tongues 2 being readily bent inwardly toward the common center at each end of the wrapper strip 1 to constitute end closures as seen in Fig. III, and when the wrapping has been completed, the outer sheet 4 shown in Fig. I may be twisted at its ends to prevent the end tongues 2 from moving from their folded positions.
The longitudinal corrugations extend transversely of the lateral tongues 2 and the wrapper strip 1 is scored transversely at 3 so that the corrugations will bend at the junctions of the several tongues and also in line with the points of said tongues, thereby permitting the corrugated wrappers to fit very closely around an egg.
If desired the outer wrapper sheet 4: may be dispensed with and in this event the ends of the corrugated sheets are preferably secured by a sealing flap 5 shown in Fig. III.
IVe claim:
An egg wrapper comprising a strip of paper corrugated longitudinally, said strip being formed with a series of V-shaped lateral tongues at each of its side edges, said V-shaped tongues being adapted to be bent inwardly so that the side edges of each tongue will engage the side edges of the next adjacent tongues when the points of said tongues meet at a common center, the longitudinal corrugations being arranged transversely of said V-shaped tongues so as to permit said tongues to bend freely around the opposite ends of an egg, the corrugated portions of said paper being mashed to produce a series of scores extending transversely across the inner face of the paper in line with the points of said tongues and also in line with the junctions of said tongues, thereby providing for the bending of the strip between and at the junctions of said tongues.
