Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALDEN W. GALLUP and DANIEL KELLEHER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrapper-Packages and Methods of Forming the Same, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to paper or felt wrappers particularly designed for use upon bottles and of the type in which a cylindrical tube is formed with folded flaps to produce the taper for the neck of the bottle.
Heretofore it has been the practice to manufacture the individual wrappers, which are then packed in bundles for shipment to the point of consumption. Great difficulty has been experienced in handling the wrappers on account of their flimsy character and the tendency for one wrapper to catch beneath the fold of another. Thus the cost of production is materially increased by the difficulty of handling and packaging for shipment.
l/Vith the present invention this difliculty has been overcome by forming and packaging the wrappers without completely severing the same from each other. This permits of using automatic machinery in packaging as well as in forming the wrappers, while in use the individual wrappers are readily torn from the strip.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan showing a tubular strip from which the wrappers are formed and indicating the several steps in the forming operation; Fig. 2 shows a package of the wrappers in the form of a roll; Fig. 3 shows a flat package in which the wrappers are alternately reversed from end to end; and Fig. 4 is a section showing how the reversing of the wrappers will compensate for the additional thickness of the folded flap to form a symmetrical package.
A is a paper tube formed from a continuous strip having its edges seamed together at B. From this strip the wrappers are formed by partially severing in from opposite edges thereof at C and C to form gores or flaps D, which are then folded back upon the body and secured by a suitable adhesive. The unsevered portion E intermediate the cuts C and C is also preferably weakened by a perforation or otherwise, so as to permit of either of these ways may then be inclosed' in a suitable outer wrapper and is ready for shipment.
In use, when the package is opened the wrappers may be successively torn from the strip and placed upon the bundles. All the wrappers in the package which are unused remain connected to each other, which avoids confusion in the packing room. Therefore there is an advantage in the package when the wrappers are being used as well as the advantage in manufacturing and in shipment.
What we claim as our invention is 1. A wrapper package, comprising a continuous tubular strip having individual wrappers formed of partially severed portions thereof.
2. A wrapper package, comprising a continuous tubular strip partially severed and folded to form individual tapering wrap-' pers.
3. A wrapper package, comprising a continuous tubular strip partially severed and folded to form individual wrappers stacked adjacent to each other.
4. A wrapper package, comprising a continuous tubular strip partially severed and folded to form the individual wrappers and wound to form the package.
5. The method of forming and packaging wrappers, comprising the formation of a continuous tubular strip, partially severing the same to form the individual wrappers, and stacking to form the package.
6. The method of forming and packaging wrappers, comprising the formation of the continuous tubular strip, partially severing said strip and folding to form the individual tapering wrappers, and packaging without further severing.
