Patented May 19, 19 14.,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THORNTON J. .ponwrrr, a citizen of the United States, residing 1n the city and county of San Francisco and specification.
My invention relates to corrugated fiber-- board shipping boxes for glassware or fragile merchandise. I
To meet the demand for light-weight shipping cases for shipping heavy, fragile merchandise by freight, considerable difliculty has been experienced in making a fiberboard or paper shipping case which will have sufficient strength and rigidity and at the same time protect the contentsfrom breakage in transit. The present invention solves the problem in a practical, economical manner. I Y
Having reference to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of the box illustrating the invention. Fig. 2'is an enlargedcross section of the box material.
This invention consists of two or more layers A--A, of corrugated fiber-board, placed face to face and on opposite sides of the central backing or sheet 2, to which central backing sheet 2 the corrugations of the sheets A-A' are firmly attached throughout their entire length by some suitable adhesive preparationythen over each of the cor-- A-A' is secured an outside rugated layers finishing sheet 3 of stifiish surfacing and material. 3-3 make a double sheet of great rigidity and strength suitable for box purposes and at the same time give an enhanced degree of resiliency and elasticity so as to reduce. the liability to breakage or other injury of the contents.
Owing to thethickness of the double cor- These.five sheets A, A, 2 and Witnesses:

Therefore, I originated a wide crease, indicated at 5, equal in width to the thickness of the corrugated board, so, that when the panels constituting the flaps of the-box are bent at right angles,- the folded parts will easily ad ust themselves to one another without breaking the creased portions or bending orbulging the sides of the box. a
Having thus described my invention, wha
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- As a new article of manufacture, corrugated fiber-board for shipping boxes and the like, composed ofa central base sheet, a corrugated sheet on each face of said base sheet and secured thereto, and a facing sheet disposed over and secured to each corrugated sheet, each of the corrugated sheets, at intervals, having several of the corrugations straightened out so as to provide flattened parts which are uninterrupt'edly secured to opposite faces of the base sheet and which in turn have the respective facing sheets uninterruptedly secured to said flattened parts,
whereby hinge connections of five-ply and THORNTON J. CORWI/N.
