UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN EDWARD THORNTON, OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
CARDBOARD BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
Application filed October 31, 1899. Serial No. 735,432.
To all whom it may concern:
angles of the boxes where the edges abut by strengthening stri s of material pasted glued or otherwiseattac ed thereto or by metallic. cli s or the like.
find a very strong and durable angle may be made-to the box in an entirely dlfierent ay by cutting the edges of the card board destined to form the angles with a number of fiat 'pro'ections and recesses of interlocking dovetail or other approximate or similar shape and bendin' over such projections intermediate of then len th to form the angles of the box so that t e pro'ection on one side enters the-space between t e projections on the other side. i
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accom anying drawings in which several forms obox constructed in accordance with the invention are'illustrated as examples.
Figure 1. is a perspective view of box.
Fig. 2. is a pers ective view of box showing modified form 0 joint. Fi 3. is a perspective view of box turned ttom upwards showing jointing round the bottom edges. Fig. 4. 1s an extended blank of box shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5. is an extended blank of box shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 6. is an extendedblank of sides and ends of box shown in Fig. 3. Fig. '7. is a blank for bottom of box shown in Fig. 3. Fig.- 8. is an extended blank of sides and ends of-box with modified Fig. 9. is a blank for bottom of box s own in Fig. 8..
The box a, is rectangular shape and may be of any size the parts being jointed together either at the vertical edges or around the bottom. Along the edges b that are to be jointed together are formed a; number of recesses 01' notches c and projections d alternating with each other of such a shape as to interlock one into'the other the pro ection d being wider at its extremity and the space or notch narrower. The projections on their inner side are scored bent or. creased along the lines 00-11 to cause them to bend at right angles intermediate of their length so that when the edges b are brought together the two sets of projections lie in the same flat plane and the end of the projections d fit into the corresponding recesses or notches 0 and interlock or dovetail therewith. The projections d on the end interlock or dovetail with the spaces or notches c on the sides and the'projections d of the sides interlock or dovetail with the recesses or notches c on the ends.
The angleformed at the edge by bending the projections intermediate of their length on the line x.y prevents the interlocking arts being pulled asunder but they may be urther. secured by glue gum mucilag'e cement or other adhesive material applied to the edges to give additional strength.
The boxes a may be shaped by cutting away the .corner pieces and jointing the angles as in Fi s. 1, 2, 4 and 5 or the bottom and sides ma be made separately and jointed along the ottom edge as in Figs. 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
'What I claim as m invention and desire to rotect by Letters atent is n a rectangular card board box, or case having ad'acent sides and ends, thec'ombination wit one side formed with a plurality of interlocking projections creased andbent at right angles Intermediate of then length to form the corner of the box, of another side also formed with a plurality of interlocking rojections creased and bent at right angles lntermediate of their length, the projections on one side looking into those on the other side, and holding securely together without cement,'substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. a
FRED. O. HARRIS,
WALTER J. SKERTEN.
