ED STAT NEWEL A. HANNAH, OF GLARYVILLE, KENTUCKY.
HARNESS-HANGER.
To all whom-it may concern Be it known that I, NEWEL A. HANNAH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glaryville, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in HarnessHangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harness hangers or brackets; and it has for its object the provision of an automatically folding hanging arm and means for supporting the arm in a horizontal position irrespective of the angle of inclination of the object to which thehanger is connected.
Another object of the invention-is the provision of means for automatically engaging the arm and for supporting the same in an operative position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for facilitating the return of the arm to an inoperative position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Fignre 1 is a perspective view of the hanger; Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough, showing the arm folded to an inoperative position; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the attaching bracket; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the brace member.
The hanger comprises an attaching bracket 1, which niay be constructed of metal and provided along its longitudinal side with oppositely arranged guide grooves 2 wherein is mounted a sliding head 3 having an outwardly extending flange 4 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Above the guide grooves 2, the attaching bracket 1 is provided with spaced lugs 5, through which is passed a pin 6 which pivotally supports a hanging arm 7. A spring 8 is wound around the pin 6, and as illustrated one terminal of the spring is engaged against the hanging arm while another terminal of said spring is engaged against the bracket 1 at a point beneath the pin 6 whereby the spring normally exerts its pressure to hold said hanging arm in a vertical inoperative position. A brace 9 connects the sliding head 3 with the hanging arm and as illustrated said brace includes a lower section 10 and an upper section 11, the latter having formed Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 18, 1913.
to which the bracket 1 is connected.
Patented Dec. 30, 1913. Serial No. 755,197.
therein a longitudinal series of passages 12, which are adapted to aline with similar passages 13 in the lower section 10 and to receive therewith a retaining pin 14. From this construction it is evident that the brace sections 10 and 11 may be extended relatively so that the hanging arm 7 may be supported in a horizontal position irrespective of the angle of inclination of the object The bracket is provided with suitable perforations 15, through which may be extended suitable fastening devices (not shown) whereby the device may be properly supported in place.
At a point below the guide grooves 2, the bracket 1 is provided with a locking device 16 embodying a single strip of resilient metal having a portion 17 extending outwardly from the bracket and a locking portion 18 extending inwardly toward the bracket and disposed directly in the path of the sliding head 3, whereby to be actuated thereby when the head is moved to a prescribed position and then cause the locking portion to be properly extended into a keeper notch 19 in the flange 4 of said sliding head. The member 16 is provided with a manipulating ring 20, which may be grasped and pulled so as to release the locking port-ion from the keeper recess in the flange 4 and thereby permit the hanging arm to be automatically returned to an inoperative position under the influence of the spring 8. The locking member is provided preferably with a curved surface 21, which is adapted to be engaged by the flange of the sliding head, so as to facilitate the mutual cooperative association of the locking portion in the recess of said sliding head. The hanging arm is provided with a manipulating ring 22 which may be engaged by the hand to permit of the application of pull against the arm when it is desired to move the same to an operative harness hanging position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the'form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A bracket provided with longitudinally extending guide grooves, an arm .mounted for swinging movements on the bracket, a head carried by the arm and slidable in the grooves and provided with a keeper notch, and a locking device secured to the bracket and closing the lower ends of the grooves and provided with a free springy locking portion curved in the direction of the bracket and adapted for engagement in the keeper notch whereby to hold the head against sliding movements in the grooves and to retain fixed angular adjustments of the arm upon the bracket.
2. A' bracket provided with longitudinally extending guide grooves, an arm mounted for swinging movements on the bracket, a
head carried by the arm and slidable in the grooves and provided with a keeper notch, a locking device secured to the bracket and closing the lower ends of the grooves and provided with a free springy locking portion curved in the direction of the bracket and adapted for engagement in the keeper notch whereby to hold the head against sliding movements in the grooves and to retain fixed angular adjustments of the arm upon the bracket, and an adjustable brace connecting the arm with said sliding head.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
