UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY H. MORGAN, 0F ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA.
STUMP-BURNER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY H. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the parish of Rapides and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Stump-Burner, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a stump burner and has for its object the provision of a device of this character which is portable and which may be used over stumps of various sizes.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable air tube whereby the draft may be admitted to the proper place to insure the continuous burning of the stump.
lVith these and other objects in view which will appear as the description pro ceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :Figure l is a perspective view of the burner; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View; and Fig. 3 is a perspective of the air tube.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a casing which is open at the bottom and this casing is preferably cone shaped as shown and converges into the smoke stack 2. The door 3 covers an opening through which access may be gained into the interior of the casing. This door is provided with a catch 4 whereby it is held closed.
In order to secure the proper draft in the casing I have a tube 5 which is slidable through a ball 6 which is movably held in position in the casing by means of the flanged socket member 7. The tube 5 is provided on the bottom with the guard Specification of Letters Patent.

which consists of a plurality of wires 8 which are secured 011 the edge of the tube by means of the collar 9. On the top of the tube I provide a hinged cover 10 which is adapted to be opened when the fire is burning within the casing.
It will thus be seen thata burner in which the air tube may be adjusted to any position and which is adapted to automatically adjust itself during the burning away of the stump. the ball and socket joint I am enabled to turn the tube in any position and by having the tube slidably mounted within the ball it will slide and adjust itself automatically as the stump burns. As the fire is started the lower edge of the tube is placed against the kindling or fire and as the same burns the tube as before stated will slide and follow the fire.
By providing the guard consisting of the wires 8 I prevent the clogging of the end of the tube by ashes.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A stump burner comprising a casing open at the bottom and having a conical top converging into a smoke stack, a curved flange secured to the casing around an opening therein, a ball having a passage therethrough movably held in slidable in the passage in the ball, a hinged cover on the top of the tube, and a guard on the bottom thereof, said guard being composed of wire strands secured to the tube by a collar.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HARVEY I-I. MORGAN.
