UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATTIE GRAY, OF HEBER, ARKANSAS.
STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,892, dated December 5, 1893. Application filed duly 12 1893. Serial No. 480,262. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTIE GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Heber, in the county of Cleburne and State of Arkansas, have invented certain newand useful Im provements in Stoves; andI do hereby-declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to stoves and especially to that class which are adapted to be employed for smoking meat and has for its object to prevent burning of the meat and at the same time make it convenient to produce the desired result, the parts being simple and effective in their construction and operation.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved stove. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the smoke pipe on an enlarged scale, shown broken away and illustrating the two positions of the interior damper.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of the stove, which is sup plied with feet 2, a front-door 3, a front-slide damper 4t, and a closed top 5. The stove may be of any preferred form and dimension and at the back thereof is supplied with a short smoke-pipe 6 having an upper collar 7, to which is connected a sleeve 8 by a hinge 9. The said sleeve 8 is supplied with a wire gauze cap 10, which completely closes over the upper portion thereof, and is adapted to be brought down on top of the smoke pipe 6, being freely removable through the hinge 10, and when the said sleeve 8 is brought over the upper end of the pipe 6 it rests against the collar 7, the latter forming a shoulder for said purpose.
7 when in closed position.
In operation, the stove is placed in proper relative position to the meat to be smoked, and as is usually done, within a closed compartment or Outhouse. A fire is then started in the stove and the smoke therefrom liberated through the smoke-pipe into said compartment or directly against the meat which may be suspended very closely thereto. It will be observed that the perforated damperplate prevents the flame or ignited particles of combustion from passing up through and out of the said smoke-pipe, but at the same time permits a continual ascent of the smoke column. The wire gauze cap on the sleeve 8 also materially assists in preventing the escape of sparks or ignited particles of combustion, and by this means, the meat can be drawn very closely to the same without danger of burning.
The device is simple and convenient in its nature, easily and readily handled, and comparatively inexpensive.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a stove for smoking meat, the combination of a body, a smoke-pipe having an upper collar, a sleeve hinged to said collar, and adapted to be closed down upon or opened from the top of the said smoke-pipe and provided with a wire gauze cap that completely extends over the upper portion thereof, and a perforated damper-plate mounted in said pipe below the said gauze cap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib ing witnesses.
MATTIE GRAY.
