3,055,160 SPARK ARRESTER Thomas William Dwyer, Badger, Grand Falls Dist, Newfoundland, Canada Filed Dec. 14, 1960, Ser. No. 75,832 4 Claims. (Cl. 55-482) This invention relates to fines and more particularly to a spark arrester therefor.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a spark arrester for preventing the flow of sparks outwardly through a flue of a burner of any particular type.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a spark arrester of the aforementioned type which can be manually actuated to dislodge solid particles from gas exhaust ports, thus assuring proper control at all times.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a flue having a spark arrester made in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged framentary cross sectional view of the main operating parts of the assembly shown in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the side of the blocking member forming a part of the present invention;
FIGURE 4 is a view similar to FIGURE 3, showing the opposite side of the main body portion;
FIGURE 5 is an enlarged fragmentary cross sectional view of the main operating parts of the assembly shown in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 6 is a perspective view of a shaft forming another part of the present invention; and
FIGURE 7 is a side view of the assembly shown in FIGURE 1.
Referring now to the drawing, a spark arrester assembly 10 made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a main conduit 12 which serves as a flue for exhausting gases from a combustion unit 14. Mounted within the longitudinal bore of the cylindrical flue pipe 12 is a main body member 16 of generally hollow spherical configuration having a plurality of ports 18 extending through the surface thereof around the entire surface area of this member.
It will be evident from FIGURE 2 that the spherical member 16 virtually blocks the flow of all solid particles through the conduit 12 from the lower to the upper end thereof, while permitting the flow of exhaust gases therethrough by means of the ports 18.
One side of the main body member 16 is provided with a cylindrical socket 20 which rotatably receives the inwardly projecting end of a mounting stud 22 carried inside of the fiue pipe 12. The diametrically opposite side of the member 16 is provided with a non-circular recess 24 within which a similarly shaped non-circular stud portion 26 of a dry shaft 28 is received. This shaft 28 is rotatably mounted upon the diametrically opposite side of the pipe 12 from the bearing pin 22 by means of a lock pin 25, and is used to rotate the main blocking member 16 by means of a handle 30 secured to the shaft 28 by a lock pin 29. A hand grip 32 is secured to the outermost end of the handle 30 to facilitate the rotation thereof.
It will now be recognized that in actual use, all solid particles are prevented from flowing upwardly through the flue pipe 12 by the blocking member 16. However, flue gases are permitted to escape through the ports 18. In the event that solid particles block some of the passages through the ports 18, the main body member can be briskly rotated by the handle 30, to dislodge such particles therefrom, thus providing for the continued operation of the assembly.
While this invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is best defined by the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A spark arrester comprising, in combination, a conduit for exhausting combustion gases, a hollow spherical member having its surface perforated, the perforations permitting said gases to flow therethrough, said member blocking the passage of solid particles therethrough, and manually operated means for actuating said member to discharge solid particles from blocking gas flow through said perforations.
2. A spark arrester as set forth in claim 1, wherein said conduit comprises a substantially cylindrical flue pipe.
3. A spark arrester as set forth in claim 1, wherein said perforations are spaced substantially equally around the surface of said spherical member.
4. A spark arrester as set forth in claim 1, wherein said spherical member is rotatably supported at one side upon one side of said conduit, and said manually operated means comprises a crank rotatably mounted upon a diametrically opposite side of said conduit having a noncircular portion in driving engagement with the adjacent diametrically opposite side of said member.
