v 11 a it MAX SALTZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MAX SALTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of lvlanhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Automobile- Veil, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to novel and useful improvements in veils designed especially for ladies use, and the invention has for its object the provision of an improved veil designed more especially for use when autoniobiling or the like, to protect the wearer from excessive air currents and dust, thus permitting the taking of a trip with increased comfort and enjoyment.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved veil structure which is designed for use with hats of various sizes, and which is also provided with an improved means for fastening the veil around the neck of the wearer, and also a transparent front or sight section having vents or openings whereby a suflicient amount of air will be supplied for the comfort of the wearer.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides more particularly in the peculiar combination and arrangement of parts which will be illustrated as a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings and described in the specification.
Reference is to be had to the accompanyin drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. and in whieh Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved automobile veil in applied position; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation; Fig. is a plan view showing the improved veil in blank form and the elastic band for securin the device on the hat or head, severed; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional perspective view showing the manner of mounting the tape for fastening the veil around the neck; Fig. (3 is a similar view showing the manner of securing the transparent front or sight section to the body of the veil; and Fi 7 is a similar view illustrating the manner of shirring the top edge of the veil and securing an elastic therein to permit the veil to accommodate itself to various size hats.
In the illustrated preferred embodiment Specification of Letters Patent.

of the invention, the numeral 10 indicates the body of the veil, the same being formed from an elongated rectangular blank or section of chiffon or other partially transparent cloth suitably hemmed at its ends, as shown at 11, to keep the material from fraying out and also to add to the attractiveness of the veil. The upper longitudinal or top edge of the blank is also hemmed, as illustrated at 12, and provided with spaced rows of stitching, as illustrated at 13, to provide a narrow casing 14f through which an endless or continuous elastic band or section 15, preferably round elastic, is extended so that the ends of the blank or veil section will meet in overlappedrelation. The elastic is extended through suitable openings in the casing 14 and folds at 11 inwardly of the edges of the latter so as to permit the elastic to move more freely than if extended through the ends of the casing and also permit the ends of the veil to be drawn together or spaced apart at the back to secure more fullness at the sides of the veil if desired.
From Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, it will be observed that the veil may, if desired, be designed to encircle and fit over a hat 16 of the wearer, and in such event the fold 12, by reason of the engagement of the elastic 15 through the casing 14:, may be shirred, as indicated at 1'7, thus permitting the veil to hang loose around the brim of the hat and head of the wearer.
In order that the veil may be fastened around the neck of the wearer, the lower longitudinal edge of the blank is provided for approximately one-half its length, constituting the front portion, with a fold 18 located intermediate its ends and designed to receive a securing tape 19, preferably ribbon tape. This tape is anchored by stitching, or otherwise, centrally of the length of the fold 18, as shown at 20, so that the extremities of the tape extend beyond the ends of the fold and may be passed rearwardly around the neck of the wearer, and the pertions of the veil beyond the extremities of the fold 18, so as to gather the material and permit it to hang at the back of the head of the wearer, as indicated at 21 in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. The tape in this position is tied in the form of a bow 22, and by reason of the fact that the front portion of the veil at its lower edge is drawn against the neck or tucked under the chin of the wearer, the entrance of wind into the veil to STATES PATENT OFFICE.
inflate the same, or the entrance of dust, is prevented.
To additionally add to the comfort of the wearer and permit proper respiration, as well as to prevent obstruction of view of the wearer, the veil is provided at an intermediate point with a transparent front or sight section 23, which is preferably of transparent celluloid and elongated longitudi nal'ly'of the veil blank, said section being secured in an opening in the veil body. To secure the section 23 to the veil body, the edge portion thereof is attached by means of a binding 2 which is stitched to the material of the veil and folded on the exposed edge of the transparent section. Th is section is further provided at spaced points near its edge with a plurality of vent or air openings 25, sutiicient to provide for proper respiration of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An automobile veil comprising a rectangular blank, a continuous elastic band arr. nged at the top portion of the blank, a transparent front portion mounted in the blank and totally surrounded by the material thereof, and a tying member mounted at the bottom portion of the blank.
2. An automobile veil comprising a rectangular blank, a continuous elastic band arranged at the top portion of the blank, a transparent front portion mounted in the blank and totally surrounded by the material thereof, and a tying member mounted at the bottom portion of the blank, said transparent front portion being of such width as to project beyond the sides of the head and having a plurality of spaced apertures near its edge portion.
3. A veil of the class described, comprising a blank section of cloth, a sight section for the front portion of the veil, an elastic of continuous form carried by the top edge of the veil, and means at the bottom edge of the veil for securing the same around the neck of the wearer.
l. An automobile veil, consisting of a rec tangular blank of partially transparent cloth having end folds and a top fold with an adjacent casing, an endless elastic carried in the casing to permit the end folds to be joined or separated and said top edge to be shirred, a section of transparent celluloid secured in an opening in the front portion of the blank and provided at spaced points with openings near its edge, a fold centrally of the bottom edge of the blank, and a tape disposed in the fold and anchored centrally, the ends of the tape projecting beyond the fold and being adapted to be tied back for bunching the parts of the blank beyond the ends of the latter fold and for securing the device around the neck of the wearer.
Qt veil of the class des ribed, comprising a blank of close woven fabric having a casing at its top portion, means engaged in the casing for drawing the top portion of the veil together. a tmnsparent front portion secured in an aperture in the blank and inclosed by the latter, said transparent portion being flexible and provided with a plurality of openings, and a tying member at the bottom portion of the blank with the free ends terminating short of the ends of the blank.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAX SALTZ.
