WRENCH.
Application filed ma 16, 1812. Serial No. 59;;
Z '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLIVER WESTON, a citizen of the United States, residing Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in W'renchcs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches and is designed particularly for pipe wrenches.
The main object of the invention is to provide a wrench for operating different sizes of pipe or nuts, the same being accomplished by the use of a removable jaw hav ing a plurality of differently inclined toothed surfaces and so arranged with relation to a stationary jaw that it forms different angles therewith.
Another object of the invention is to provide removable toothed jaw which may be replaced by a new jaw when the same has become ineffective from wear .With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain combinations and arrangements of the parts hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof, and the novel features will be distinctly pointed out in the up ended claim.
11 the drawings like characters of referenoe indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig; 2 is a view of Fig. 1 looking at the under edge, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stationary jaw end of the wrench, the removable jaw being omitted, Fig. 4 illustrates the relation between the stationary jaw and the removable jaw when the latter is reversed from the position shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 shows a removable jaw having teeth on several difierently inclined surfaces.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the handle, which is preferably of the shape shown but may he of an suitable form, and 2 the stationary jaw, hot 1 of which parts are connected in iiagonal enlar ed portion 3 ed forward ees 4 and a The enlarged portion 3 a square tapering opening similar rear is provided with Specification of Letters 'ei-ented i) on. EMS,
rough from its r eiving the corrend 7 of a removed en an inclinath stationery 2,
when in normal rewith. for ustment of the ent of pipe or nuts, is made with difierently surfaces as shown at 9 and able jaw (1 tion WI iK ranged tl jaw iilustrated in F end 7 of ren'icwable rear and 15 wedge sir jaw when hiting into ti o erated upon tends to draw the the removable jaw more sccnrel tapering opening 6. As iilnsiratc 5 the removable jaw may be made it th is sides or edges also having differently inclined toothed surfaces 11 and 12 from its toothed surface 13, which will-allow of a more varied'angular adjustment with relation to the stationary jaw.
removable jaw may be changed in the tapering opening 6 so that its toothed surfaces will make difierent angles with the stationary jaw and thereby fit different sizes of pipe or nuts; and when the teeth become worn, the removable jaw may be replaced by a new toothed jaw.
Having fully described my invention what I claim is:
A wrench comprising a handle, a stationary jaw, an enlarged diagonally arranged portion connecting the base of the stationary jaw to the upper end of the handle, the enlarged portion being provided with a square opening arranged on an acute angle opening being smaller at its forward end than at its rear end with converging walls forming a tapering opening, a jaw having difierently inclined toothed surfaces and tee 4c. Said oper In a wrench constructed as described, the
with relation to the stationary jaw, the
terminating in a square tapering opening to hold the last mentioned jaw so that its inclined toothed surfaces will form different acute angles with the stationary jaw and for wedging itself into said tapering 0peningon account of the pulling pressure exerted by the teeth of said jaw engaging the material being operated upon during the manipulation of said handle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER WESTON.
