Be it known that I, LEONARD CLOUGH BIGGS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Dunedin, New Zealand, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Guards for Steel Haoksaws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steel hack saws of the Simonds and other similar types, in which the saw handle is at one end of the 7 saw connecting one end of the adjustable back and the corresponding end of the blade mounting. With such saws the hands of the user are subject to injury when sawing quickly or on finishing a cut unexpectedly, or when the blade breaks, and the object of my invention is to obviate this.
My invention consists of a hand guard constructed and arranged as hereinafter described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a a side view of my invention applied to a saw, Fig. 2 is a rear View of the shield, Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the slotted lug and the set screw, Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the screw connecting the shield and the lug.
The hand guard consists of a curved shield 1 adapted to lie in front of and partly surround the knuckles of the user when the handle 2 of the saw is grasped by the hand. At the top edge of this shield a slotted lug 3 is suitably attached preferably by a screw 4 so that the shield 1 is readily detachable. The back 5 of the saw passes through the slot 6 in the lug 3, and the latter is secured on the back 5 by means of a set screw 7 so as to hold the shield 1 in position. The bottom edge of the shield has a rearwardly extending tongue 8, the end of which is turned downward and notched 9, so as to rest on the top of the rod 10 to which the saw blade 11 is attached. This supports the shield l at its lower end and at the same time does not interfere with the manipulation ofthe rod 10 in setting the blade 11 at different angles. The position of the hand guard may be adjusted as desired, according to the size of the users hand, by slackening the set-screw 7 and sliding the guard forward or backward as may be required, and then tightening the set-screw again.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is V 1. A hanclguard for steel hack saws comprising a shield, means for connecting the top edge of said shield to the saw-back, andmeans for connecting the bottom edge of said shield to the saw-blade supporting rod.
2. .A bandguard for steel hack saws comprising a shield, a slotted lug connected to the top edge of said shield and fixed to the saw-back, and a rearward notched extension to the bottom edge of said shield adapted to rest on the saw-blade supporting rod.
3. A handguard for steel back saws comprising a curved shield, a slotted lug detachably connected to the top edge of said shield by a screw passing through holes in said lug and said shield, said lug embracing and sliding on the saw-back, means for clamp- .ing said lug on said saw-back in desired position and a rearwardly extending tongue on the bottom of said shield, having a down wardly turned end, said end being notched and adapted to rest on the saw blade supporting rod.
