Abstract

A shield of sheet metal clamped onto a hacksaw frame at the handle end of the hacksaw. The shield curves out and back around the knuckles and back of a hand grasping hacksaw handle so as to protect the hand, particularly on the last strokes of a hacksaw when it cuts through the work piece.

Myinvention is a safety shield device for mounting on a hand hacksaw.
The shield is formed of sheet metal, of 12 to 16 gauge, and shaped to be clamped onto a hacksaw frame at the handle end of the frame. The shield curves out and back around the knuckles and back of the hand grasping the handle of the saw.
A major advantage of my invention is that it is adaptable for fitting on conventional hand-held hacksaws.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING:
The objects and features of the invention may be understood with reference to the following detailed description of an illustrative embodiment of the invention, taken together with the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a side view of the invention in use; and
FIG. 2 is a top view of the invention in use.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT:
Turning now descriptively to the drawing, in which similar reference characters denote similar elements throughout the several views, FIGS. 1-2 show a conventional hacksaw 11 with handle 13 and blade 14. Attached to the blade frame 12 nearest to the handle 13 is a shaped metal shield 15. This metal shield 15 acts as a safety device geared to protect the hand 18 of the user.
The shield 15 is formed of sheet metal of a size of 12 to 16 gauge which is formed at the attachment end of the shield within a U-shaped bend 21, which fits about the hacksaw frame member 12. A bolt 17 is fastened through the parallel sections of the U-shaped bend 21 for tightening purposes.
The shield 15 is formed in the sectional shape of an open curve so as to fit about the back of a users hand 18 that is grasping handle 13.
In use, the shield 15 guards the users hand 18 when, on the last stroke of the blade 14 cuts through the work being sawed.
Since obvious changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the invention described herein, such modifications being within the spirit and scope of the invention claimed, it is indicated that all matter contained herein is intended as illustrative and not as limiting in scope.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A sheet metal shield that may be readily clamped to the frame of a-hacksaw for the purpose of protecting a hand of the user that is grasping the handle of the hacksaw, said shield being shaped and fitted with attachment means so as to locate the shield in a position that does not interfere with the replacement of a blade on the hacksaw,
said shield formed at one end in a U-shaped clamp 7 section of a size to fit about a frame member of the hacksaw that is generally oriented perpendicular to the axis of the hacksaw blade, with threaded fastening means fitted to the said end of the shield for clamping the U-shaped clamp section about the same frame member,
said shield shaped in a curved form so as to rest, in the attached state in a location extending from the attached hacksaw frame member, to a location about one side of the hacksaw handle and separated from the hacksaw handle by a space sufficient to permit positioning of the hand of the user about the hacksaw handle and between the hacksaw handle and the shield in said space.

Claims (1)

1. A sheet metal shield that may be readily clamped to the frame of a hacksaw for the purpose of protecting a hand of the user that is grasping the handle of the hacksaw, said shield being shaped and fitted with attachment means so as to locate the shield in a position that does not interfere with the replacement of a blade on the hacksaw, SAID SHIELD FORMED AT ONE END IN A U-shaped clamp section of a size to fit about a frame member of the hacksaw that is generally oriented perpendicular to the axis of the hacksaw blade, with threaded fastening means fitted to the said end of the shield for clamping the U-shaped clamp section about the same frame member, SAID SHIELD SHAPED IN A CURVED FORM SO AS TO REST, IN THE ATTACHED STATE IN A LOCATION EXTENDING FROM THE ATTACHED HACKSAW FRAME MEMBER, TO A LOCATION ABOUT ONE SIDE OF THE HACKSAW HANDLE AND SEPARATED FROM THE HACKSAW HANDLE BY A SPACE SUFFICIENT TO PERMIT POSITIONING OF THE HAND OF THE USER ABOUT THE HACKSAW HANDLE AND BETWEEN THE HACKSAW HANDLE AND THE SHIELD IN SAID SPACE.
