To all whom it may concern Be it known'that I. WVILLIAM P. PrrT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specifi cation.
My invention relates to improvements in.
loose leaf binders.
My invention is particularly adapted for. use in loose leaf binders which have'two Other novelfeatures of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

1 and 2 designate respectively two clampingmembers preferably of right angled form, and having secured respectively. to them oppositely extending leaf supporting posts 3, the posts of one member being, preferably, disposed out of axial alinement with the posts 50f the other clamping member. Secured rigidly to the upper clamping member 1 by project-ions 8 riveted in holes provided in the .member 1 is a cup shaped locking member 9, the upper open end of which is provided with the projections 8, and the lower end of which is 9 is a wedge carrying member 12 having a vertical hole 13 therethrough in which is adapted to extend the locking member 11. 13. The upper end of the spring 17 bears against the under side of the leaf clamping member 1, and the tension of the spring nor mally forces the member 12 to the locking position, shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 10.
To withdraw the wedges 15 from the locking position to the unlocked position shown in Fig. 11 different means may be employed.
For this purpose I preferably provide a lever 19 which is mounted in a slot 20 provided in the clamping member 1. The lever 19 has an arm 21 which extends horizontally through a notch 22 provided in the upper end of one side of the locking member 9. The arm 21 is provided inside the member 9 with a vertical head 23' which is mounted in a notch-24 provided in the adjacent side 'of the member 12. One end and upper edge of the lever 19 is provided preferably with a notch 25 which is adapted to receive the point of a lead pencil or other article, not shown, which may be inserted in the slot 20 for the purpose of swinging the lever 19 from the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 5 to the position shown in dotted lines in said figure. When in the last named posiiion. the lever 19 projects above the outer surface of themember 1, so that the lever may be grasped and swung to the position shown in Fig. 11. When the lever 19 is swung to the position shown in Fig. 11, the arm 21 will bear upon the member 9 and the head 23 will have engaged a horizontal shoulder 26 at the upper end of the notch 24 and forced the wedge carrying member 12 to the unlocked position, shown in Fig. 11. It will be noted that the shoulder 26, in the position shown in Fig. 11, bears against the flatedge of the head 23 at one side of the arm 21 of the lever 19. By reason of this construction,'the lever19 and member 12 are releasably and automatically held in the unlocked position until such time as the operator again swings the lever 19 to the locked position shown in Figs. 5, 9 and 10. When the lastnamed operation is efl'ected, the spring 17 will force the member 12 to the locking position.
In. order that there may be no protruding parts extending through the clamping member 1, when the parts are in the locking po sitions, the arrangement of the lever 19 is such that its upper edge will be parallel with the upper side of the member 1, and,

It will be noted by referring to Figs. 5 -and 10 that, when the parts are in the locking position shown in Figs. 5 and 10, that the head 23 of the lever 19 does not contact with the shoulder 26 The lever 19 may thus he swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8 before the member 12 will be started on its upward movement. In order that the lever 19 may be held in the positionshown in dotted lines in Fig. 8, frictional means .are provided comprising a fiat spring 27 of bowed form, and which is disposed between the member 12 and the member 9 and has a bearing against said members. The head 23 of the lever 19 is preferably thicker than thedepth of the recess or notch 24, so that when the spring 27 is mounted in the position indicated in Fig. 10, the head 23 will be pressed between the members 9 and 12. The friction exerted by means of the spring 27 is insufiicient to overcome the effect of the spring 17 when said spring is compressed by moving the lever 19 to the position shown in Fig. 11, the friction effected by the spring 27 is, however, suliicient to hold the lever in the position shown in'dotted lines in Fig. 8 when the lever 19 is swung to said position in the unlocking movement. After the lever 19 has been swung from the position shown in 11, the inertia of the lever 19 and member 12, when in motion under the action of the coil spring 17, will cause the lever 19 to be returned to its initial position shown in solid lines in Figs. 5, 8 and 10.
In the operation of my invention, to re move or insert leaves, the lever 19 is first swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8, after which the lever is seized and swung to the position shown in Fig. 11. The wedge carrying member 12 will thus be moved so as to withdraw the roller wedges 15 from looking contacts with the member 11 and inclined portions 16 of the member 9. The locking member ll may now be with drawn from the member 9, and leaves 6 inserted or removed. The ends of the leaves 6 may have notches 28 at the ends for receiving the members 9 and 11. After the leaves have been inserted or removed, the lever 19 is swung to the locking position'and the member 11 inserted between the rollers 15. The rollers 15 will permit the member 11 to move toward the member 1, but will instantly lock with the member 11 and member 9 to resist the movement of the member 11 away from'themember 1. The loose leaves 6 will thus be firmly and securely held clamped between the clamping members 1 and 2.
I do not limit my invention to the specific structure shown and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended may be made without departing from the spirit of invention.
Having thus described my invention, what- I I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a loose leaf binder, two leaf clamping members, two locking members secured respectively to the clamping members, a wedge, yielding means for moving the wedge to a position in which it will lock the locking members against relative movement in one direction, and a lever adapted to be grasped and operated by hand for operating the yielding means to withdraw the wedge from the locking position.

In a loose leaf binder, two locking members, a wedge, spring actuated means for moving the wedge to a position in which relative movement in one direction, and a lever adapted to be grasped and operated by hand for operating said spring actuated means to move the wedge from the locking position, the lever having means by which when it is moved to a predeteri'nined posibe held from being retracted to thelocking position. i
