To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, DONALD Mohlnna, a subject of the- King of England, residing at Halifax, in the Province of Nova Scotia, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chisel-Gages, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings. 7
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wood working tools and more particularly to an attachment for a chisel or like tool and the primary object of the invention resides in providing an improved device of this character with means thereon to gage the depth of the instroke or cut of the blade.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a device consisting pf few and.
simple parts which may be quickly andreadily adjusted in the application of the same to use.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims,
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is an elevation of the device set up for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the device taken on line 8-3, Fig. 1. Fig. t is a vertical fragmentary side elevation of the shank; and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the blade removed.
In describing my invention, 1 shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a threaded shank or shaft which is received in an internally threaded handle 2, the outer end of said threaded shank being slotted centrally as shown at El, and slightly enlarged at its extreme outer end The extreme outer end of one of the inroations has formed thereon a T-head l, the outer face of which is flat to contact with the material worked upon, as will be here inatter and more particularly set forth.
A blade 5 is provided, the inner reduced end of which is provided with a central longitudinal slot 6, extending from the rear edge thereof, and said slot isslightly reduced at its inner end by the provision o the inwardly extending shoulders or lugs 7. The blade is applied 'to the threaded shank 1, so as to be received in the slot 3 of the latter and an adjusting sleeve or elongated nut 8 is engaged with the threaded shank 1 and adapted to be received in the slot 6 of the blade between the shoulders 8 formed adjacent the outer wall thereof and the inner end shoulders or lugs '2' of the same. A checking collar 9 is loosely applied to the shank 1, between the handle 2 and the adjusting nut 8, the same being provided at diametrically opposite points thereon with the notches 10, which receive therein the edges of the shoulders or lugs 7 on said blade 5. This collar, when properly engaged with the blade, prevents the movement of the blade with respect to the shank 1 and when the handle is turned home on the shank 1, to bind frictionally against the collar 9, the blade will be securely and tightly held in position and the head 4 or gage on the shank will be retained in its adjusted position with re spect to the blade.
In practice, assuming that the device is set up for use, should it be desired to adjust the gage or stop flange 4 on the shank 1, so as to limit the instroke or depth of cut of the blade, the handle member 2 is first turned counter-clockwise on the shank 1 to disengage the same from the collar 9. The adjusting nut or sleeve 8 is then turned on the shank l in either one direction or the other, as desired, it being understood that when the cut is turned counter-clockwise, the blade will be adjusted with respect to the shank so that the stopping flange or head l will be disposed nearer the cutting edge of the blade. with respect to the shank so that the stop flange 4 is disposed to the desired position, the handle member 2 is then turned home on the shank 1 to bind tightly against the collar 9 and, in order to secure said handle against all possible movement after being so adjusted, a set screw 11 is provided in the ferrule thereof to bind against the shank 1. When the handle member is so locked in position, the parts of the device will be securely held in their adjusted positions and When the blade has been adjusted the device is ready for use. It will be seen that the T-head or flange 4 at the outer end of the shank 1, will contact with the material worked upon and limit the instroke or cut of the blade of the chisel.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a chlsel with an improved means for gaging the depth of the instroke or cut thereof and it will further be seen that the parts of the devicemay be quickly, readily and accurately adjusted.
It will further be seen that the device is one which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiicient in operation.
.Wh1le I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is 1. In a tool of the class described, a threaded shank slotted centrally at its outer end and provided with a head on the extreme outer end of one of the furcations thereof, a blade slotted from its inner end and received in the slotted end of said shank, means on said shank received in the slot of said blade for the adjustment of the latter with respect to the shank, means engaged with the inner end of said blade to prevent movement of the latter with respect to the shank, and a handle member adjustably engaged with said shank and adapted for engagement with the last referred to means to retain the parts of the device in rigid position.
2. In a tool of the class described, a threaded shank slotted at its outer end and provided with a T-head at the extreme outer end of one of the furcations thereof, a blade slotted from its inner end and received in the slot of said shank, an adjusting nut on said shank received in the slot of said blade, means engaged with the inner end of said blade to prevent the movement of the same with respect to the shank, and
outer end of one of the furcations thereof,
a blade provided with a slot extending from its inner end and received in the slot of said shank, an adjusting nut on said shank received in the slot of said blade, a collar loosely applied to said shank andhaving notches therein receiving the inner end portions of the blade therein, and an internally threaded handle member engaged with said shank, said handle member, when turned from binding engagement with said collar being adapted to lock the parts of the device in their adjusted positions.
4. In a tool of the class described, a threaded shank slotted at its outer end and having a -T-head formed on the extreme outer end of one of the furcations thereof, a blade provided with a slot extending from the inner end of the same, said blade being received in the slot of said shank, an adjusting nut applied on said shank, and received in the slot of said blade, the extreme inner end portions of said blade being provided with inwardly extending lugs to provide shoulders for engagement with the inner end of said nut, a collar loosely ap plied on said shank and having notches at diametrically opposite points thereon, said notches receiving therein the inner end portions of said blade, and an internally threaded handle member engaged with the inner end of said shank for binding engagement with said collar, whereby to lock the parts of the device in their adjusted positions.
