Description

E. B. WEBB.
NUT LOOK.
APPLIUATION FILED FEB. a, 1910. 1,067,389. Patented July 15, 1913.
I'W E WITNESSES: l/VI/EIVTOR ,1) ATTORNEY FFQ.
EDGAR B. WEBB, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1913.
Application filed February 8, 1910. Serial No. 542,752.
To a]? whom. it may concern Be it known that I, EDGAR B. Venn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nutliocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to nut locks, and the objects of my invention are to provide a means for holding a nut upon a. bolt in a firm and locked position, so as to prevent the same from being turned from pressure, or working loose by vibration or other cause. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a central sectional elevation of my device. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan taken on line 3. 3 of Fig. 2.
Similar letters or figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In my device, A represents a bolt, having the usual screw threads, 1, 2, and 3. B represents a nut mounted on said bolt A. Let into the surface of the bolt A, I have the longitudinal key way C, terminating at a point below the threads of the bolt and having the gradual curve to the surface at the lower end. I place in the key way C, the key D, made of hard material, steel or similar material of greater strength than the material of the bolt or nut, and on said key is the head E. This key D is of approximately triangular cross section, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and has a cutting edge F for the purpose of indenting or penetrating the edges of the screw threads of the nut.
In operation, in order to lock the nut, having turned the nut B down upon the bolt A, I drive in the key D into the key way C, having the cutting edge of said key turned toward the threads of the nut. This cutting edge, as the key is driven forward, crosscuts or indents the edges of the threads 4, 5 and 6 of nut B, and thus becomes firmly embedded therein, preventing the nut from turning upon its threads and holding it firmly in position. To remove the key I), I strike blows upon the lower end thereof, and can thus drive out the key; or I may place a small tool in the bottom portion of the slot C and drive the key out when the head E is too close to the nut to remove by the manner just indicated. It will be observed that the indentation or cross-cut made by the blade, or edge of key I) does not in any material manner injure the threads of the bolt, so as to prevent its being turned on or off after the key is removed. The extreme end of the key D is pointed, so as to follow more readily the groove, when it is entered therein for the purpose of lock ing the nut, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, for which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows:
A nut lock comprising a bolt having a. longitudinal groove of uniform depth for the greater partof its length and extending to the end of the bolt, and said groove gradu ally tapering to the surface of the bolt at its other end, a nut screwed upon the grooved portion of said bolt, and a key in said groove of uniform thickness for the greater part of its length and provided with a cutting edge engaging the threads of said nut, and tapered gradually at its end so that it engages the tapered portion of said groove with its tapered portion wedgingly when driven home.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
his EDGAR B. X IVEBB.
