JOSEPH CONRAIDI, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
FEED-BAG.
masses.
Application filed August 9, 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrrr CoNnAnI, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feed-Bags, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has for its general objects the feeding or moving upward of a feed bag to the mouth of the animal as the latter con sumes the feed therein; the rendering of these devices collapsible, whereby, they may occupy a minimum of space when not in use; and the registering of the amount of feed introduced into the bag.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device showing the same attached to a horses head. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of the device folded or collapsed. Fig. 3 is a detail ver tical sectional view of one of the hangers. Fig. 1 is a sectional detail taken through a portion of the body of the bag and also through one of the hangers.
In the embodiment shown the body 5 of the bag is of flexible material, preferably textile, such as canvas and may be made up of one or more pieces suitably connected together so as to form a hollow cylinder when the bag is in operative position as shown in Fig. 1. The bottom or lower end 6 of the bag is preferably though not necessarily of the same material as the body 5 and is suitably secured to the latter, so that it may be bulged inwardly when the body 5 is contracted. The hangers are arranged longitudinally of the body 5 and on opposite portions thereof, the outer casings 8 of these hangers being preferably cylindrical in contour and arranged in curved depressions 9 in the body 5. Any suitable means may be employed for securing the casings 8 in the depressions 9 such as rivets 10 which pass through the walls of the casings 8 and the depressions 9 as shown in Fig. 2. The telescoping members 11 of the hangers Z), are as shown in detail in Fig. 3, surrounded by compression springs 12 which bear at one end on heads 13 formed with or otherwise secured to the inner ends of the members 11 and at their opposite ends bear on the upper Specification of Letters Patent.

ends 14 of the casings 8. The upper ends of the members 11 extend through openings in the ends 14 of the casings and are provided with suitable eyes 15 to which are fastened the opposite ends of the holding strap 16 which passes over the horses head. In their normal positions the heads 13 are held to the lower ends 17 of the casings 8 by the springs 12 and an indicating finger 18 extends through a longitudinal slot in the casing 8 to a scale 19 marked on the casing 8. By graduating the scale to pounds the user of he bag can readily ascertain the amount of feed therein.
It will be seen that when feed is introduced into the bag the Weight of the bag and consumed the springs will gradually ex-' pand, whereby, the bag will rise thus maintaining the feed within the same within convenient proximity of the animals mouth. Suitable air vents 20 are formed in the body 5 of the bag and screen coverings 21 are provided for the said vents to prevent the escape of feed therethrough. When the is not in use the bottom 6 thereof may be bulged inwardly and a roll made of the bag as shown in which event the bag in its collapsed condition may be stored in a coinparatively small space in a wagon and held against unrolling by means of straps 22 which embrace the opposite end portions of the roll.
What I claim as new is:
A device of the kind described comprising a flexible bag, two cylindrical casings of sub stantially even length with said bag disposed at diametrically opposite points, each of said casings having a relatively large sector of its body projecting inside of said bag, means for holding said casing in said lastnamed positions, a plunger disposed in each casing a head formed on each plunger mounted in said casing, and a spring coiled around said plunger in each casing.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
