NITED STATES 'ATENT' 'FFICE.
JOHN PARKER MACLEARN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE ATHLETIC NOVELTY COMPANY, OF
SAME PLACE.
STRlKlNG O R PUNCHING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 547,731, dated October 8, 1895.
Application filed November 19, 1894. Serial No. 529,272. (No model.)
To all whom it TIMI/y concern.-
Be it known that vI, JOHN PARKER MAO- LEARN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,
State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Striking or Punching Apparatus, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
to My invention consists of a striking or punching apparatus having the standard for supporting the head thereof formed partly or entirely of a spring, and an auxiliary springinclosed within the same, thus adding stability to the standard, while the same presents the proper resiliency. I
It also consists of a novel manner of securing the head to the standard of the apparatus.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a striking apparatus embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section thereof on line as as, Fig. 1. Fig. 4. represents a horizontal section of the lower portion of the head and adjacent parts on an enlarged scale.
, Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a 0 standard which rises from and is connected with the base B, a portion of said standard consisting of the coiled spring C, to whose upper end is attached the rod or tube D, to which latter is attached the head E. Secured 5 to the standard is the sleeve F, with'which are connected the extensible or expansible and contractile springs G,'of rubber cord or suitable material, the latter being attached to the Vertical rods H on the base B. Within 40 the coiled spring 0 is the coiled spring J,
which serves to stiffen said spring 0 and impart the proper resiliency to the standard, while also strengthening the latter. The head consists of the inflated bladder or bag K and 5 the covering L therefor, of canvas or other material, of substantially the shape of said bag, with straps M connected with said covering and the standard. Stitched or otherwise secured to the bottom of the covering L is a metallic or other plate P, which is provided with the socket Q, receiving the upper end of the rod or tube D, the head and standard thus being reliably connected, while the position of the plate is such that the hand is not liable to strike the same.
When the convolutions of the springs extend in the same direction, the springs may be screwed to each other as means for conmeeting the same. The lower end of the rod or tube D is screw-threaded, as at B, so as to engage with the convolutions of the upper end of the springs O as a screw, thus connecting and supporting said rod or tube.
1 do not in this application claim, broadly, the combination of a universallyflexible standard with a series of springs radiating therefrom and serving to connect the standard to the outer portion of the base, as this combination is found in my previous application, Serial No. 519,171, filed August 1, 1894:.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the bag, the base, the bag-carryin g standard having, at the lower end, a coiled spring whereby it is connected to t-he base, and a second spring contained within the first and located at the base of the same, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the bag, the base, the bag carrying standard having at the lower end a coiled spring whereby said standard is flexibly connected to the base, and a series of extensible and contractile springs disposed radially around the standard and serving to 8 connect the same to the outer portion of the base, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the base, the standard resiliently mounted thereon so as to be free to swing in any direction, an inflatable o bag, a casing therefor, and a cap mounted upon the upper end of the standard and upon which said casing is seated and to which it is secured.
their lower ends to the standard below the cap, substantially as specified.
JOHN PARKER MACLEARN.
W'itnesses:
JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM, R. A. GRAESER.
