PNEUMATIC PUNCHlNG-BAG AND PLATFORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,776, dated March 15, 1898. Application filed June 7, 1897. Serial No. 639,698. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE B. FRAZIER, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Punching-Bags and Platforms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to pneumatic punching-bags and platforms; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved pneumatic punching-bag and platform in position for use upon a wall. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken approximately on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. at is a horizontal section taken approximately on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
My object is to construct a punching-bag platform having a pneumatic cushion and construct a punching-bag for use in connection with said pneumatic cushion, the punching-bag being mounted in such aposition that it does not engage the cushion, but said punching-bag being attached to and mounted by a rod suspended by a universal joint from the platform and said rod carrying a buffer which engages the cushion of the platform.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, the ring 5 is mounted in a horizontal position and is concavo-convex in cross-section. An arch 6 is mounted in a vertical position extending over the axial center of the ring 5 from front to rear and is formed integral with the ring. At the center of the arch 6 is a circular portion 7, having a vertical opening 8. Extending baokwardly from the rear end of the arch 6 is an arm 9, and a flange 10 extends transversely of the rear end of the arm 9. The cars 11 and 12 extend outwardly from the upper face of the ring 5 and in a line transversely of the arch 6, the upper faces of said ears being substantially flatand horizontal. Triangular frames 13 and 14 are attached to the ears 11 and 12, respectively. The frames 13 and 14: are substantially alike, and each consists of a horizontal bar15, a vertical bar,
16, and the inclined bar 17, connecting the forward end of the horizontal bar 15 with the upper end of the vertical bar 16, all formed integral. The horizontal bar 15 extends backwardly a short distance below the lower end of the vertical bar 16, and the inclined bar 17 extends upwardly and backwardly a short distance beyond the upper end of the vertical bar 16. Flanges 18 are formed transversely of the rear upper ends of the inclined bars 17, and corresponding flanges are formed transversely of the rear ends of the horizontal bars 15, said flanges being in vertical alinement with the flange 10, and said flanges being perforated to form ears through which screws 19 are inserted as required to secure the platform to the horizontal bars 201 and 21, and said bars 20 and 21 are secured to the wall or to any suitable support in any suitable manner. At the forward ends of the horizontal bars 1 5 are laterally-proj ectin g ears 22, the lower faces of said ears being substantially flat and horizontal, and the ears 22 are secured to the ears 11 by means of the bolts 23. A ring 24: is mounted in horizontal position within the ring 7, and the pins 25 and 26 are screw-seated in the ring 7 and extend into bearings in the ring 24, said pins being section and the rod 31 is formed integral with or attached to the bottom of the cup, thus forming a universal joint between the rod 31 and the platform. The arch 6, the arm 9, and the bars 15, 1 6, and 17 are T-shaped in cross-section. The rod 31 is screw-threaded near its lower end and the bell-shaped buffer 33 has a screw-threaded aperture through which the rod extends. After the buffer has been placed in position upon the rod the extreme lower end of the rod is bifurcated.
The punching-bag consists of the casing 34;, said casing being constructed of sections of suitable material firmly secured together and having the opening 35. The edge of the material forming the casin g 34 around the opening 35 is firmly bound to prevent its tearing and stretching. In forming the binding the ring 36 is placed inside of the casing and the edge 37 of the casing is turned inwardly around the ring and secured to itself by the stitching 38. The concavo-convex plate 39 is placed inside of the casing in positionto close the opening 35, said concavo-convex plate having an opening near its center through which the tube 40, communicating with the inflatable sack 41, passes. The concavo-convex plate 39 is secured to the bifurcated ends of the rod 31 by means of rivets or screws, said rod extending outwardly through the opening 35, and the inner face of the lower edge of the buffer 33 engages the outer face of the casing 34 around the binding formed by the ring 36, and when the buffer is screwed firmly into position the casing 34 is held between the plate 39 and the buffer.
An inflatable ring 43 is placed against the concaved lower side of the ring 5 and is secured in position by means of the rubber bands 44, encircling said ring 43 and said ring 5. The ring 43 is inflated or deflated through the valve 45.
All the parts are so arranged relative to each other that when the punching-bag swings the buffer 33 will strike the cushion formed by the inflated ring 43. The rod 41 forms a rigid connection between the platform and the punching-bag, which prevents the punching-bag from passing upwardly inside of the ring 5.
I claim 1. In a device of the class described, a pneumatic ring-shaped cushion mounted in a horizontal position, a universal joint mounted above the axial center of said cushion, arigicl rod attached to said joint and depending through said cushion, a punching-bag rigidly attached to the lower end of said rod, and a buffer rigidly mounted upon said rod in position to engage said cushion when said rod swings, said rod being of such a length that the punching-bag swings outside of the cushion and does not engage the cushion, substantially as specified.
2. In a device of the class described, a punching-bag casing constructed of sections of suitable material firmly secured together and having an opening, a suitable binding around said opening, a concavo-convex plate placed within said casing and having an opening near its center, a rod rigidly fixed to said plate and projecting outwardly from said plate through the openingin said casing, and a bell-shaped buffer placed against the outer face of said casing around the opening in said casing and having said rod screw-seated in its center, substantially as specified.
3. In a device of the class described, a punching-bag constructed with an opening, means of forming a firm binding around said opening, a concavo-convex plate placed within the casing of the punching-bag and having a rod projecting through the opening in said casing, a bell-shaped buffer placed in position to engage the outer'face of said casing and around said opening therein, and a suitable connection between said buffer and said plate, substantially as specified.
4. In a device of the class described, a punching-bag constructed with an opening, means of forming a firm binding around said. opening, a concavo-convex plate placed within the casing of the punching-bag and having a rod projecting through the opening in said casin g, a bell-shaped buffer placed in position to engage the outer face of said casing and around the opening therein, suitable connection between said bufi:"er and said plate, a rod rigidly attached at its lower end to said buffer, means of forming a universal-jointed support for the upper end of said rod and a pneumatic cushion mounted in position to be engaged by said buffer, substantially as specified.
5. In a device of the class described, a suitable frame, a pneumatic ring-shaped cushion secured to said frame,a universal joint mounted above the axial center of said cushion, a rigid connection depending from said joint through said cushion and a punching-bag rigidly secured to the lower end of said connection, said connection being of such a length that the punching-bag swings outside of said cushion and does not contact with the cushion, substantially as specified.
6. In a device of the class described, the
concavo-convex ring 5 mounted in a horizontal position with its concaved side downwardly, a pneumatic cushion attached to the lower side of said ring, the arch 6 extending upwardly over the axial center of said ring, the circular portion 7 formed at the center of said arch and having a vertical opening, the ring 24 pivotally mounted within said opening, the ring 27 pivotally mounted within said ring 24, the pivots of said ring 27 being in a line transversely of the pivots of the ring 24, a rod rigidly attached to said ring 27 and depending through the axial center of said cushion, and a punching-bag rigidly attached to the lower end of said rod, substantially as specified.
7. In a device of the class described, the concavo-convex ring 5 mounted in a horizontal position with its concave side downwardly, a pneumatic cushion attached to the lower side of said ring 5 and suitable arms attached to said ring 5 for supporting it and holding it rigidly in position, substantially as specified.
8. In a device of the class described, a concavo-eonvex ring 5 mounted in a horizontal position with its concave side downwardly, a pneumatic cushion attached to the lower side of said ring, the arch 6 extending upwardly over the axial center of said ring and having its ends attached to said ring, suitable means of suspending a punching-bag from the center of said arch, the arm 9' projecting forwardly from the rear end of said arch and the frames 13 and 14 attached to said ring 5; each of said frames consisting of the horizontal bar 15, the Vertical bar 16 and the inclined bar 1'7, all formed integral; substantially as specified.
9. In a device of the class described, the concavo-convex ring 5 mounted in a horizontal position with its concave side downwardly, a pneumatic cushion attached to the lower side of said ring, the arch 6 extending upwardly over the axial center of said ring and having its ends attached to said ring, the arm 9 projecting backwardly from the rear end of in presence of two witnesses.
