Description

2 1948' E. J. ADAMS EXERCISING DEVICE Filed June 13, 1944 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Invetof [a WARD dofi/v AMI/m5,
Feb. 10, 1948. i ADAMS EXERCISING DEVICE Filed June 13, 1944 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 By 24m and Patented Feb. 10, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in exercising devices, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising unique means for developing the shoulders, legs, arms and abdomen, improving timing, promoting mental and physical agility,
et cetera.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide an exercising device of the aforementioned character comprising novel means for supporting a punching bag for swinging movement in a horizontal plane.
Still another important object of the invention is to provide an exercising device of the character described wherein the aforementioned punching bag may be readily adjusted vertically as desired.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an exercising device which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact and which may be manufactured and installed at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an exercising device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an elevational View of the outer portion of the swinging arm with the bag thereon, parts being omitted.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a smooth, tubular metallic post I of suitable height and diameter. The post i is mounted on a base '2 which, in turn, is secured on the floor by suitable fastening elements 3.
Journaled on the post I is a vertically adjustable bearing 4. A removable pin 5 is insertible selectively in spaced, staggered openings 6 in the post I for supporting the bearing 4 in adjusted position. Projecting horizontally from the bearing 4 is a telescopically adjustable arm I. As illustrated to advantage in Figure 3 of the drawing, the arm 1 includes male and female sections 8 and 9, respectively.
A punching bag It is mounted horizontally on the outer end of the arm I in longitudinal alignment therewith. Toward this end, the bag Ill is provided, on its inner end, with a flexible loop 2 H having mounted therein a metallic ring l2. A hook l3 on the outer end of the arm 1 is en-; gaged in the ring 12 for detachably connecting the bag Hlto said arm.
Threadedly mounted for adjustment on the outer end portion of the arm I is a substantially cone-shaped or bell-shaped fitting I4 which is engageable over the inner end portion of the bag iii, said fitting also enclosing and concealing the elements ll, i2 and 13. The fitting i4 is provided with a cushioning cover l5 o-f sponge rubber. A lock nut l6 secures the fitting [4 in adjusted position on the arm 1.
It is thought that the manner in which the device functions will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the bag I {I is punched back and forth in a horizontal plane with both fists or, if' desired, said bag may be caused to swing in a complete circle around the post i. In addition to permitting the exercising of virtually all parts of the body, the device may also be used for training by boxers and other athletes. By simply inserting the pin 5 in the correct opening 6, the bag I0 may be adjusted to the desired elevation to suit the individual. Set screws l'l secure the section 8 Lf the arm I in adjusted position in the section 9.
It is believed that the many advantages of an exercising device constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of said device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
An exercising device comprising a post, an arm mounted for horizontal swinging movement on said post, a hook on the free end of said arm, a punching bag loosely and detachably connected to said hook, and a substantially bell-shaped fitting threadedly mounted on the arm and engageable over the inner portion of the punching bag for maintaining said bag in a horizontal position in longitudinal alignment with the arm.
