Nrrnn TATE'S' HORACE B. FRAZIER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
PUNCHlNG-BAG PLATFORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,77 5, dated March 15, 1898.
Application filed June 7, 1897. Serial No. 639,699. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORACE B. FRAZIER, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching-Bag Platforms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to punching-bag platforms; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure l is a front elevation of my improved punching-bag platform in position for use. Fig. 2 is Vertical section taken approximately on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken approximately on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, the rebounding ring 5 is substantially circular in plan and is concavo-convex in cross-section, the inner edge of said ring being somewhat higher than its outer edge. The bag-supporting arch 6 is formed integral with the rebounding ring 5, and extends from one side of the ring to the other. The arm 7 is a con-' tinuation of the arch 6 and extends horizontally backward. In the center of the arch 6 and in vertical alinement with the axial center of the rebounding ring 5 is a ring or circular portion 8, having a vertical opening 9. The ring 10 is placed within the opening 9 and the pins 11 and 12 are inserted through the ring 8 into bearings in the ring 10, as required to form a pivotal support for the socket 10. A cup-shaped ring 13 is placed within the ring 10 and the pins 14 and 15 are inserted through the ring 10 into bearings in said cup-shaped ring 13, as required to form a pivotal support for said cup-shaped ring, said pins 14 and 15 being ina line transversely of the pins 11 and 12, as required to form a universal joint. The cord 16 is inserted upwardly through the opening in the bottom of the cup-shaped ring 13, and a knot 17 is formed in the upper end of said cord, as required to drawn.
The punchingbag 18 is attached to the lower end of the cord. The brackets 19 and 20 are attached to the horizontal bars 21 and prevent said cord from being with-.
22, said horizontal bars being attached to the wall or other suitable support. The brackets 19 and 20 are substantially alike, and each consists of a horizontal bar 23, having the curved forward portion 24, the inclined bar extending upwardly and backwardly from the forward end of the upper portion 24 and the vertical bar 26, connecting the horizontal bar 23 with the inclined bar 25 at points near their rear ends, all formed integral. The lugs 27 and 28 project horizontally outwardly from the upper edge of the rebounding ring 5, and the forward ends of the brackets 19 and 20 are secured to said lugs, respectively, by means of the screws 29, inserted through said brackets and screw-seated in said lugs. Lugs in every way identical with the lugs 27 and 28 project from. the upper edge of the rebounding ring 5 in position to receive the screws 30, which screws are inserted downwardly through the forward ends of the horizontal portions 31 of the bars 23.
The brace 32 is attached to the arch 6 at a point approximately half-way from the ring 8 to the forward end of the arch 6 by means of the screws 33, and said brace extends backwardly and upwardly to a point in alinement with the upper rear ends of the brackets 19 and 20. Ears 34 project laterally from the rear ends of the arm 7 of the horizontal bars 23, of the inclined bars 25, and of the brace 32, said ears all being in alinement and attached to the horizontal bars 21 and 22 by means of screws or bolts. With the exception of the rebounding ring 5 all the parts of the frame are T-shaped in cross-section, and the forward end of the brace 32 is bifurcated, in order to straddle the u pwardly-proj ectin g flange of the arch 6.
I claim 1. In a punching-bag platforn1,the rebounding ring 5, said ring being concavo-convex in cross-section and the inner edge of said ring being higher than its outer edge, the arch 6 extending from one side of the ring 5 to the other, the arm 7 projecting backwardly from the rear end of the arch 6, and the circular portion 8 havinga vertical opening 9 formed at the center of said arch 6 in vertical alinement with the axial center of the rebounding ring 5, all formed integral, substantially as specified.
2. In a punching-bag platform, the rebounding ring 5, said ring being concavo-convex in cross-section and the inner edge of said ring being higher than its outer edge, the arch 6 extending from one side of said ring to the other, the arm 7 projecting backwardly from the rear end of said arch 6, the circular portion 8 formed at the center of said arch 6 and in vertical alinement with the axial center of the rebounding ring 5 and having a vertical opening 9, the ring 10 pivotally mounted within said vertical opening 9, and the cupshaped socket 13 pivotally mounted within the ring 10, and having an opening in its bottom, substantially as specified.
3. Inapunching-bagplatforn1,therebounding ring 5, the arch 6 extending from the front side of said ring to the rear side and upwardly, the arm 7 extending backwardly from the rear end of said arch, and the brackets 19 and 20 attached to said rebounding ring by means of the screws 29 and 30, said brackets consisting of the horizontal bars 23 having the curved portions 24:, the inclined bars 25 extending upwardly and backwardly from the forward ends of said horizontal bars and the vertical bars 26 connecting the rear ends of said bars 23 to the rear ends of said bars 25, substantially as specified.
4:. In a punching-ha g p1atform,the rebounding ring 5, the arch 6 connected to said ring, the arm 7 extending backwardly from said ring, the brackets 19 and 20 attached to said ring and the brace 32 attached to said arch and extending upwardly and backwardly, substantially as specified.
5. Ina punching-bag platform, a rebounding ring, an arch extending over the axial center of said ring and having a vertical opening, the ring 10 pivotally mounted within said vertical opening, the cup-shaped socket 13 pivotally mounted within said ring 10, the pivots of said socket extending in a line transversely of ,the pivots of said ring 10 and said sockethaving an opening in its bottom, a punching-bag, a flexible connection attached to said punching-bag and extending through the opening in said socket 13, and means of preventing said connection from being withdrawn from said socket, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE B. FRAZIER.
