BICYCLE-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,032, dated April 6,- 1897.
Application filed July 6, 1896. Serial No. 598,069. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BIERBACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Viseonsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bicycle-supports, with especial reference to their use in baggagecars.
The object of my invention is to provide means for supporting the bicycle from the upperportion of a baggage-car or from any other suitable point, such as the ceiling of a room or a bracket at the side thereof.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1 is a side view of my invention as it is used for supporting the bicycle. Fig. 2 is a front view of the hanger-bar with the bent portion of the lower end removed. Fig. 3 is a top view of the inclined or bent portion. Fig. ais an enlarged side view showing the holding-plates in section on the line 4c 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the third holdingplate, drawn through its pivotal support.
Like parts are identified by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.
A hanger-bar A is provided with a flat plate B at its upper end, the latter having bolt or screw holes G for attaching the bar at any suitable point in the ceiling or roof.
A is a strengthening-rib on the rear side of the bar.
The lower end act" the bar is bent or inclined and provided with raised bosses D, having bolt-holes therethrough for the attachment of the ll-shaped holding-plates E E. Each of the holding-plates is provided with a tubular thimble-bearing F, preferably of a conical form on its exterior surface, and with the base of the cone conforming to the circular periphery of the bosses D. The holdingplates are pivotally secured to the bar by bolts G, passing through the thimbles F and the holes in the bosses D.
H is a spiral spring secured at each end in eyes I, projecting from the thiinbles F for that purpose, and so arranged as to hold the plates in a position to engage the inner sides of the rods of the bicycle-frame, which diverge from the crank-bearings, the bicycle being ininto a recess K in the base of the thimblebearing F. This recess is suflioiently large to permit of the adjustment of the plate E upon its pivot, it being desired to use the plate only for facilitating the hanging of ladies wheels or wheels of unusual or antiquated styles the rods of which do not form an angle adapted to fit between the plates E and E.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bicycle-s11 pport, consisting in the combination of a supporting-bar, two or more holding-plates pivotally supported upon the bar and adapted to engage the diverging frame-rods of a bicycle, and a spring connected with each of said holding-plates and adapted to retain them in position for engagement with said rods, substantiallyas described.
2. A bicycle-support, consistingin the com.- bination of a supporting-bar, two or more holding-plates pivotally supported upon the bar, a spring connecting said holding-plates, and arranged to hold the plates in a position for engaging the diverging frame-rods of a bicycle, the coils of said spring being located near one of said holding-plates, substantially as described.
3. Abicycle-support, consisting in the combination of a hanger-bar, provided with an angula-rly-bent portion, a pair of pivotallysupported holding-plates, and a spring connecting the same and adapted to hold them in a position for engaging the bicycle-frame rods, together wit-h a third holding-plate for engaging frame-rods having unusual angles, substantially as described.
