UHAMMOCK-YSUPPORT.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,307, dated April 30, 1889.
Application filed July 16, 1888. fierial No. 280,036. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORATIO E. COLLINS, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Hammock-Support, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in hammock-supports, and has for its object to provide a hammock support which may be readily mounted in place and horizontally adjusted when in position, and from which the hammock and an awning may be readily debroken away, of the central support for the frame. Fig. 4 is a View in vertical section, withparts broken away, of one of the upper ends of the hammock-frame. Fig. 5 is an end view thereof in elevation, with parts broken away and in section; and Fig. 6 is a detail view of an adjustable shelf 011 the frame, looking from beneath.
In the construction of this invention a centrally-pivoted frame is provided, consisting of the' curved arms 1, preferably formed of gas-pipe, and connected at their lower ends by square socket 2 to correspondingly-sh'aped projections 3 on a casting, 4, having a socket, 5.
Thcupper ends of the curved arms 1 project into vertical slecves'6, the upper end of the sleeves 6 being formed integral with a horizontal U-shaped sleeve or socket, 8. The
sleeve is provided with a hammock-hook, 9. The sleeves 6 are secured to arms 1 by screws 10, passing through the bottom of sockets S into wooden plugs 7 in the ends of the arms 1.
The arms 1 are braced bymeans of a tubular 'rod, 11, having its ends resting in the sockets 8, and secured thereto by means of the ing from a plate, 17, having a downwardlyprojecting spike, 18,which may be driven into the ground or other suitable foundation, the pin 16 projecting into the socket 5 of casting 4. With this construction the hammock may extend in any horizontal direction desired by turning the hammock frame or support on its pivot. The pivot-pin may be located wherever desired, the spike 18, which is of a size to afford a strong support, being readily driven into the ground and permitted to remain there, while the frame or support may be removed and stowed away when not required for use.
The plate 17 also afiords asupport to prevent the spike 18 from tipping over or sagging in the ground. I-Iammockcords are not required, as the rings 19 of the hammock 20 may be readily attached to the hammock-hooks 9.
In order to readily attach and detach an awning, T-shaped brackets 21 are employed, having a sleeve, 22, through which pass the curved supporting-rods 23 of an awning, 24., the T shaped brackets being attached to sockets 8 by their bent tapering ends 25 lying therein and engaging the open ends 26 of the brace-rod 11, thereby forming a joint which prevents the brackets 21 from accidentally turning. The brackets 21 may be tilted, so as to incline the awning over one side-of the hammock or the other, and Will be held by friction. In order to provide a rest for a hat, book, or papers, &c., a shelf, 27, is provided, consisting of an open-work frame, as here shown, or of other suitable shape, suspended from rod 11 by hangers 28, so as to be slid thereon, and thus permitted to be adjusted to any position on the rod above the hammock desired.
By means of this invention it will be seen that a hammock frame or support is provided which can be readily set up in any spot desired and removed, can be adjusted to any horizontal position preferred with regard to sun, breezes, or outlook, may be readily taken apart and packed up, and will be Very serw iceable.
It is obvious that the parts may be con nected together and varied in form otherwise than in the specific manner described, and hence I do not desire to confine myself to the specific construction set forth.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination, with the curved frame having a central vertical socket on its lower side and hammock-attaching devices at its upper ends, of the spike 18, having a support-- ing-plate, 17, and a pivot-pin, 16, entering said socket, substantially as set forth.
2. The C0l11bil1tti0l1,With the casting 4, having opposite side projections, 3, and a vertical intermediate socket, 5, of the curved arms 1 1, having sockets at their lower ends receiving said projections, hammock-attaching devices at their upper ends, a brace-rod connecting said upper ends, and a pivot entering said socket, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the hammockframe having socket-pieces on its ends open on their upper sides and having slots extending from their top edges downward, of a bracerod having its ends inserted into the socketpieces from above and provided with side projections entering said slots at the same time.
4. The combinatiomwith the hammock having sleeves on its upper ends, provided with hammock-supporting hooks on their adjacent sides, and horizontal socket-pieces open on their upper sides and having transverse slots through their sides, of the brace-rod inserted at its ends into said sockets from above, and having transverse projections entering said slots at the same time, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the hammockframe, of the sleeves 6 on the upper ends of said frame, formed with horizontally-aligned socket-pieces 8 on the upper ends, having transverse slots 14:, the tubular brace-rod l1, resting at its ends in said socket-pieces and provided with transverse projections 12, resting on said slots, the brackets 21, having upwardly-projecting ends entering the opposite ends of the tubular brace rod within the socket-pieces, and the canopy-frame secured to said brackets, substantially as set forth,
6. The combination, with the canopy-frame and the transverse curved rods 23 at the ends thereof, of the angular supporting-brackets 21, having transverse sleeves 22 on the upper ends of their vertical members, through which the said rods pass, the horizontal members or arms of the brackets forming their attaching means, substantially as set forth.
