To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANK A. HARVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of llennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Boxing- Gloves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object to provide a pneumatic boxing-glove.

To this end the invention consists of the novel construction hereinafterdescribed, and defined in the claim.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, wherein, like letters referring to like parts throughout the several views Figure l is a side elevation of the left-hand glove. Fig. 4 is a View, partly in perspective and partly in cross-section, showing the outer end portion of one of the gloves. Fig. 5 is a detail in longitudinal section, with some parts broken away, showin g the relation of the neck or nipple portion of thebladder to the adjacent parts of its cover. Fig. 6 is a detail somewhat similar to Fig. 5, but with the bladder left in elevation and pulled apart from the cover, and Fig. 7 is a cross-section through the right-hand glove in the plane of the thumb-piece.

a represents the glove proper, or part of the boxing-glove which fits over the hand, of the ordinary or anysuitable construction. a represents the cushion-back, made of the proper shape and fullness and joining the glove proper at the proper points to cooperate with the back and the tip of the glove proper to form a cover for an inside expansible bladder Z). The said bladder 17 is of a proper shape to fit the cover for the same and of the proper size to expand the cover to the proper tension when the bladder is filled with air to the desired pressure. Otherwise stated, the bladder 12 is made of rubber or other expansible material of such size that, if outside the cover, it would expand to much larger size than the cover when filled with air to the same pressure as when used inside the cover. This bladder l) is provided with a thumb-piece, which is adapted to fit the recess between the back of the thumb-cell and the thumb-section of the cushion-back a, as best shown in Fig. 7. The said bladder b is provided with the nipple b, fitted with the check-valve b at the neck of the bladder. The bladder is then inflated with air to the desired pressure and the nipple b is placed under an elastic keeper a fixed to the back of the wrist portion of the glove, so as to assume the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The glove is then ready for use. lVith the construction above described it must be obvious that all the'striking-surfaces of the glove will be cushioned by the air-charged bladder. The tension of this cushion may of course be varied at will by simply varying the air-pressure in the bladder.

A pneumatic boxing-glove of this character is a great improvement over the ordinary padded glove. The cushion is substantially the same at all points of the striking-surface, the glove is comparatively light and is perfectly flexible, thereby rendering the same comfortable and easy to the hand. The difference in the weight for any given desired cushion is a very great improvement. The glove has all the above-noted advantages without any material disadvantages as compared with the padded glove. The valve b in the bladder is so located that when the glove is in use the said valve will be for the most part surrounded by the air within the bladder, and the only part thereof not aircushioned will be at a point never used for striking purposes.
