LEWIS T. FOREMAN, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
TRAINING-WEIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1919.
Application filed April 2, 1918. Serial No. 226,208.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS T. FOREMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Training-Weights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to physical culture devices and aims to provide a novel form of weight, to be balanced on the shoulders when exercising, to force the user to hold his shoulders and head erect the brackets resulting in maintaining the body in an erect and healthful positio To this end the invention comprehends the provision of a hollow receptacle formed of any suitable material and provided with an opening or valve by means of which it may be filled and the weight thereof regulated to suit the convenience of the user. This filling also permits of each shoulder being subjected to different weights, resulting in the proper balancing of the shoulders.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a. view illustrating the application of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of one of the receptacles or weights;
ig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail the invention includes a receptacle of any suitable or desired configuration but it is preferred that a receptacle of semi-spherical shape be employed. This receptacle is indicated at 10 and may be formed of metal, glass, hard or of any other suitable material. The receptacle 10 is formed upon its bottom surface with a concaved portion 11, which is preferably serrated or roughened as shown at 12, the concavity providing a seat of substantially the same shape as the shoulders so that the receptacle may be readily positioned thereon.
The receptacle is designed to contain a Copies of this patent may lie-obtained for five cents each, by addressing the suitable amount of material, such as liquid or shot, so that the weight of the receptacle may be regulated to suit the individual requirements of the user. The receptacle is filled through an opening 13, which is surrounded by a neck 14, a stop valve 15 being disposed within the neck for the purpose of closing the opening 13. If desired the weight may be solid, with a suitable hole or concavity and may be manufactured in diflerent sizes or weights.
In Fig. 2 the weight is shown in oval elliptical form with the concave portion 11 extending longitudinally of the base, so that when the weight is in position it will be disposed longitudinally of the shoulder. The weight may also be provided with a nipple 16 for the attachment of a hose (not shown) for the purpose of filling the weight with either air or liquid.
In the form shown in Fig. 4, the bottom of the receptacle is sloping so as to be more easily retained on a sloping shoulder. This is designed for use by persons at the beginning of the use of the weights and may be more easily held in position than the shape previously described.
It is believed that from the foregoing description the construction and advantages of the invention will be apparent. Various changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction and the right is reserved to make such changes.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A device of the class described embodying a hollow receptacle having its bottom shaped 'to conform to the shape of the shoulders, a filling opening for said receptacle and a closure for said opening.
2. A device of the class described embodying a hollow receptacle having its bottom shaped to conform to the shape of the shoulders, a roughened or serrated surface formed on said bottom, a filling opening for said receptacle and a closure for said openmg.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
LEWIS T. FOREMAN.
