TOY BALLOON. Mme/mom men NOV. 12. 1914.
Patented Apr. 2?, 1915.
of my improved balloon; .lFi
FRANK J. CREQUE, UECUYAHOGA FALLS, OHIO.
TGY BALLOON.
To all to]: am it may concern:
Be it known that'l, FRANK J. Cannon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cuyahoga Falls, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio; have invented certain new and useful improvements in Toy Balloons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and metal improvements in toy balloons. and more particularly to a construction oi the valve for the same; the object being taprovide a toy balloon which is so constructed that the valve is removable in order to allow the air within the bag to pass freely through the stem, 0. suitable sound-producin'g device being arranged within the stem, in order to produce a Whistlingsound.
Another and further object of theinvention is to provide a balloon which is ex ceedingly; simple and cheap in construction and one in which the bag can be maintained inflated as long as desired and by the re moval of the valve plug, a Whistling sound will be produced, thereby enabling the toy balloon to be used for the ordinary purpose of a balloon and to produce a sound, it so desired.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In. the drawing-ligure l, is a perspective 2, is a longitudinal section through the stem showing in full lines," the balloon collapsed and in dotted lines, the balloon inflated; Fig. 3, is a perspective of. the stem detached, partly in section, showing the plug carryingthe sound-producing device; and Fig. 4, is a perspective of the plug valve, detached.
Like numerals or reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention, I employ an inflatable bag 1 preferably formed of rubber having a neck 2 which is adapted to be secured over one end of a tubular stem 3 by an elastic band a; said stem being provided with an enlargement 5 at its end in order to enable the n ck to be secured firmly in position over the tubular stem 3.
Arranged within the tubular stem 3 at the end carrying the inflatable bag, is a tubular plug 6 having its bo e erlar'ged as shown at 7 over which is arranged an elastic Specification of Letters Pa e.
or flexible strip 8 which extends rearwardly in grooves formed in the circumference of the plug 6 and is secured in position by an elastic band 9 which forces the end portions of the strip 8 within-the groove 10 formed in the plug 6 to receive the band 9 in order to securely hold the elastic strip 8 taut across the open end of the tube. This-produces a whistling sound by the air passing through the plug 6 after the bag has been inflated in the well-known manner.
Arranged within the opposite end of the stem 3, is a valve plug 11 which is tubular in form and is provided with an annular flange 12 at its out/er end forming a stop for limiting the inward movement of the plug within the stem and this flange also forms a mouth piece by means of which, the stem can be held within the mouth. The flange enables the valve plug to be readily detached. when desired and arranged lipon the inner end of the valve plug is all flat valve 13 formed of any suitable flexible inaterial non-pervious to air, so as to poinpletely close the valve plug alter the inflatable bag has been inflated by a person blowing into the, stem through the valve plug. The pressure of air against the valve 13 when the bag is inflated closes the same and maintains the same in closed position.
The operation of toy balloon as herein shown and described, is as follows: Ass-uniing that the balloon is in the position shown in full lines in; Fig. 2, a person in sorts the stem within the mouth and byblowing tl'irough the stem, the valve is opened so as to-allow air to pass into the inflatable bag in order to inflate the same, the pressure of air within the bag holding the 'alve ir closed position in order to allow the balloon to be used as an ordinary balloon and it is, of course, understood that the same can be secured to stick, if desired. "ill'ien it is desired to produce a whistling sound, the plug 11 is detached carrying the valve, which allows the air within the inflatable bag to escape through the plug (land by the passage of air through the bore, of the plug around the flexible strip 8, a whistling sound is produced.
I claim:
l. A toy balloon, having a stern, a plug arranged within said stem having a soundproducing device, and a detachable valve plug mounted in the outer end of said stem.
2. A toy balloon, having a stem provided Patented Apr, 2'7, 1915c Application filed November 12, 1914. .Beria'l Ho. 871,742.
with e sound-producing deyice and a detachable valve mounted wl tlgm sa1fi stem.
3. A toy balloon, COmPYIiSHIg an inflatable bag having a neck a stem arranged Within said neck, a tubular plug arranged within said saem having a strip of flexible material arranged over one end thereof, and a plug 'arrazugec in the opposite end of said stem having a flap valve at one-end.
.4:- As a new article of manufacture a toy baliozm, comprising an iaafie'cable bag provided. with a. neck, a tubuier stem secured within said neck a, abubulm' plug mouated within said stem, a. strip of fiexibie materia arranged over the inner end 0f said tubular plug, flanged plug arranged within the outer end 0f said. stem, and e flap valve mounted upon the inner end-0f said plug.-
' In testimony whereof I efix my signaturv in presense oftwo Witnesses.
4 FRANK Jo CREQUE.
