Speccation of Iietters Patent.
Application IIerIIanUary 18, 1913. f Serial No. 742,914.
Patented oet. 14, 191e.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS JOSEPH POWERS, a citizen of theUnit'ed States,.residing at Steubenville, in the county of Jefferson and State "of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in) Face`-Shields,'
of which the lfollowing is a specification'.
'This invention relates to improvements in face shields and has :for its object to pro'- vide an adjustable transparent'shield. for iron workers to prevent sparks, illngs, and the like from coming into contact with the wearersface or other portion of the head.
' device Adrawings in which- Another object ofthe` invention is to provide thecombination of :w face shield with a self adjusting head gear for supporting the same.
With the above and other objects in View which will be more fully explained Ain the following specification, I have invented the illustrated in the accompanying Figure 1 is a side elevation of my devioe illustrating its application to the head of a wearer, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device showing the face shield folded upon the head gear `or cap, Fig. 3 isl an enlarged detail sectional view of the face shield, Fig. 4 is areal' elevational viewl of the device,
2. The members 4 and 5 are made of spring Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the head vention, Fig.' 6 is a side elevation of a modifled form of a cap band, Fig. 7 is a front elevation of a modified shield member and Fig. 8 is a section taken on line A-Al of Fig. 7.
Like reference characters' indicate like parts throughout the specification and in the several -views in the drawings in which 1 indicates a capconsist-ing of a band 2 and a covering 3, said band being made preferably of metal and pivotally secured to its opposing sides are arms 4 and 5 held by screws 6. To the lower` ends of the arms 4 and 5 is secured a face shield 7 consisting of a frame 8 which holds a transparent member 9 which is adapted to .shield the wearers face from heat, sparks, ilings or any foreign material, yet which will not in.-
'terfere with the vision. The arms 5 and 4v are secured to the member 8l in the same manner yas they' are secured to the member steel and have their ends a and b returne in a loop so that the screws 6 passing through said loops may be tightened to v4 and 5 will remain in any position in which they are set whereby the face shield may -be readily adjusted to any desired." osition'. The halves (not shown) throughw ch the screws 6 pass are suiliciently large to permit 'of 'a sliding movement of theends a and b when said screws are tightened or loosened.
In Fi 5 I show a slightly modified form of the evice'in which the vhead band.v 1 1 is of spring steelor other spring 'material and the end 12.0 verlaps the end 13 whereby the cap will adjustitself to' fit any size head. The covering 14 is provided with a loose plait -15"whereby the'cap will expand -as well as the band. tween ywhich and the band'll, the edges of the covering 14 may be held may be provided if desired. The screws 6 may be tightened to increase the .friction betweenthe springs andarms. i
Figs. 6, 7 and illustrate another modiication of the device in which the head band 17 extends only partially around-the capk 18 (shown. in section in Fig. 8) and its ends 1 9 and 20 aire connectedby aleather strap 21 the end 22 of which may be held by the buckle 23 wherebythe device maybe fas.-I tened securely tojthe head of aIwearer. The modification shownin these 'gures also' con'- templates asbestos) face shield which isi; not necessarily transparent but which isfprovided with glass .coveredpeep holes 25'Land 26 which-are arranged -to oppose the wearers eyes. The band 1 7 may-'be located on either the inner or outer side of the cap fabric or it may be interposed between the folds of the -fabrie as indicated in Fig. 8.
Having described my invention that which I- claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters latent is: j
1. In a device for the purpose setforth comprising a supporting element, a air of suspension elements, a shield, means or pivotally connecting said suspension elements respectively to the shield and supporting element, said suspension elements bent upon themselvesV to provide frictional grips engaging with said means for maintaining said suspension elements and shield in an adjusted position.
-2. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a supporting element, a face shield, means for pivotally connecting said suspension elements to said supporting elements,
a :nonconductingf preferably and-means for pivotally connecting said suspension elements to said shield, said suspension elements bent upon themselves to prof vide frictional gripping loops engaging the means for pivotally connecting said suspension elements to the Shield whereby the latter is maintained in an adjusted position.
3. A device for therpurpose set forth comprising a supporting element, suspension elements, means for pivotally connecting the suspension elements to the supporting element, said suspension elements having their lower ends bent upon themselves to provide loops, screws extending through said loops for pivotally connecting said loops to said shield, said loops provided with frictional grippingmeans engagingwith the heads of the screws for maintaining the shield in the position to which it has been adjusted.
4. A device for the purpose setorth comprising a supporting element, suspension elements, means for pivotally connecting the suspension elements to the supporting element, said suspension elementshaving their lower ends bent upon themselves to rovide loops, screws extending through sai loops for pivotally connecting said 'loopsto said shield, said loops provided with frictional gripping means engaging with the heads of the screws for maintaining-the shield in the position to which it has been adjusted, said suspension elements having their upper ends provided with means engaging with the -supportin element for maintaining the suspension e ements adjustable at an angle with respect to the supporting element.
In testimony whereof I aHX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS J. POWERS.
