BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 14, 1913.
Application filed. November 18, 1909. Serial No. 528,660.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tnnnnnon OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in buckles; and, the invention relates, more particularly, to that class of buckles which are used with belts and especially belts worn by women.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a novel form of buckle which comprises a pair of separably connected buckleelements having suitable connecting and fastening means upon their outer faces, instead of upon the backs thereof, as heretofore, thereby providing a belt or other suitable buckle which is more easily manipulated than where such fastening devices are applied to the backs of the buckle-members; and, whereby a buckle is provided which adapts itself more readily in position upon the body of the wearer, because of the fact that there are no projections or other obstructions upon the backs of the bucklemembers.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of my present invention.
With the various objects of my present invention in View, the same consists, primarily, in the novel buckle hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, further more, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front face view of a belt buckle showing one embodiment of the present invention, and illustrating in connection therewith the end-portions of a belt which are connected with the respective bucklemembers or plates; Fig. 2 is a rear view of the parts represented in said Fig. 1; and i buckle-members 0r plates in their separated relations. Fig. 5 is a front face view of a slightly modified form of buckle made according to the principles of the present invention.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a buckle made according to and embodying the principles of this invention, and the same comprises a pair of buckle-members or plates 2 and 3 which may be of any ornamental marginal configuration and any suitable surface-ornamentation, said buckle-members or plates being provided upon their rear faces with suitable means for securing the end- portions 4 and 5 of said suitable belt thereto, and said buckle-members or plates being provided upon their front faces with means for separably connecting the said buckle-members or plates in their operative positions upon or against the body of the wearer, and at the same time providing a means of ornamentation which greatly enhances the beauty of the general design of the buckle. One means for separably connecting the said buckle-members or plates 2 and 3 consists of a number of holding or retaining hooks or tongues 6 forced or struck-up out of the plate 2 and extending from the face thereof, and a corresponding number of holding or retaining hooks or tongues 7 which are forced or struck up out of the other plate 3, substantially in the manner illustrated in the several figures of the drawings. Suitably arranged over each hook or tongue 6 is a ring or loop 8, each ring or loop being rigidly secured in position, preferably by means of solder, as 9, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings; and, suitably secured to said ring or loop 8, preferably by means of solder, as 10, is another ring or loop 11 which is thus preferably rigidly connected with the said ring or loop 8. These rings or loops 11, as will be clearly understood, are easily hooked over the respective holding or retaining tongues 7 which project from the front face of the buckle-member or plate 8, for bringing the two buckle-members into their connected relation, while wearing the belt, and said rings or loops 11 being easily unhooked from said holding or retaining tongues 7 when required.
One means of attaching the end-portions eand 5 to the respective buckle-members or plates 2 and 3 is shown more particularly in Figs. Qand 3 of the drawings, and consists of suitably formed bars or rods, as 12, which are suitably secured upon the backs or rear faces of said members or plates 2 and 3, near the meeting edges of the said plates 2 and 3, substantially as shown. Each buckle-member or plate 2 and 3 may also be provided with a guiding-bar, as 13, said bars being preferably angularly disposed, as shown, and beneath which the belt-portions are passed so as to extend straight and flattened out from the end-portions of said members or plates, as shown.
In lieu of the double-ringed fastener hereinabove described, I may use a single ring, as 14:, as shown in the modification in Fig. 5 of the drawings, each ring 14: being arranged over a hook or tongue 6 of the member or plate 2, and rigidly secured in posit-ion as hereinaboveset forth, and each ring being also detachably and separably arranged over a holding or retaining hook 7 of the plate or member 3,
It will be clearly understood that the said ring-shaped fasteners described in the foregoing specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings may be suitably ornamented; and, furthermore, that the said plates or members 2 and 3 are preferably curved, in a manner substantially as represented in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several parts and in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of my present invention, as set forth in the foregoing specification and as defined in the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as de scribed in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim l. A buckle comprising a pair of buckleplates, a plurality of holding tongues struck up out of saidplates and extending from the front faces of said plates, said tongues being arranged in vertical alinement, and
ring-shaped fasteners also in vertical alinement, said fasteners being rigidly secured to the holding tongues of one of said plates, and separably connected with the holding tongues of the other plate, each buckle-plate being formed with a vertically disposed marginal edge-portion, the vertically disposed marginal edge-portions of the two buckle-plates, when said buckle-plates are hooked together being in such close juxtaposition, so as to prevent any backward movement of said buckle-plates with relation to each other. e
2.
