To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDY JoirNsoN,. a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county ot Sangramon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in furniture particularly that class of furniture which is convertible into various artielse.
The main object of this invention is the provision of such a device which may be readily and quickly changed into a bed, a cradle, a chair having. a single seat or having a plurality of seats, arranged back to back.
A further object is the provision of such a device which is simple in construction, ef ficient in operation and readily adjustable to its various uses as desired,
To the accomplishmentof the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be defined in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying" drawings forming a part hereof and which illustrate for the purposes of disclosure, a preferred embodiment of my invention, it being understood however that suitable changes may be made within the scope of the claims without digressing from my ing ventive idea which is defined therein.

: t-ions orportions are in their horizontal position, the back support or section is adapted to be raised; so as to provide two seats back to back. This back support may be lowered and the extensible sections on the seat sec- 5 tions extended so as to form a bed. In ad dition, these seat sections in their extended position may be moved at angle to the horizontal and held in that position by suitable locking: means to provide a cradle, the back section bein down. A single seat may be provided by leaving: one seat section in a horizontal position and raising the other seatsecti-on to its uppermost position and locking it there by the means provided.
Referring; now to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base or support, which may be of almost any form, but which is shown as having" the rockers 2, and the vertical supporting members 3 and i on each side section of the base or support, the side sections being, connected by means of rods or bars 5 and 6. These side sections are provided with the upper bearing faces 7 on which are placed the leaf springs- 8, for a purpose to be described later. Suitable bars or members 9 are provided on each side section of the base or support on which are pivotally mounted the seat sections or members, by means of the hinge connections 10, as shown. These seat sections or members 11 provided with the arms 12 and the ;seat portion 13. Underneath the seat portion 13, in a recess 14, is provided the sliding extension: 15 which is adapted to be moved ou twardly from the seat section and is limjited in its movement by means of'the stud l 16 engaging? the abutment 17 at the end of the groove 18. y In order to hold this extensible member in its extended position, laterally' moving side members 19 are provided, the ends of which are adapted to rest on the side of said seat sections, as shown, so as to hold the adjustable sections 15 in their usual position. The bottom of said seat sections or members 11 are enlarged. as shown at 20, which enlargements are adapted to be eng'aged by the set screws 21 on the end of arm 22, which latter is rotatably held on the bar or member 6 by means of set screw 23. This is for the purpose of holding the seat sections in their various adjust-ed positions. The meeting edges of said seat sections 11 are cut away to provide a slot or recess to receive the vertical sliding back member or in the form of a body portion 25, the lower end of which has the edges grooved as at 26 to engage the guideways 27 on the members 4 of the base or support. This slidable back section is provided with the laterally extensible side members 28 which have the arms 29 with the lugs or extensions 30 thereon engaging" the members 31 of the body 01 the back so as to limit their outward movement. WV hen the back section or member is raised, the side members thereof will be extended and will rest upon the meeting edges of the seat sections or members, thereby holding the back section in its upper position.
The various adjustments specified may be readily understood from the foregoing description.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1 in full lines, I provide a double seat with the back section or member between the seats. By moving the side portions of the back section inwardly and pushing the back section to its lowermost position and extending the extensible members 15 of the seat portions a bed is provided, the springs 8 being utilized for the purposes of comfort. If it is desired to use this as a cradle, thesections 15 may be extended and the seat sections moved on their pivots to an angle of approximately torty-five degrees to the horizontal. The arms or members 22 will then be moved up until the set screw 21 can engage the bottom of the seat sections and hold them in position. A single seat may be readily formed by leaving one seat section in a horizontal position and raising the other seat section to its upper position, lockingit there by means of one of the arms or members.
It is seen from this description that I have provided a device which may be quickly adjusted into any one of four different articles, all suitable for use in the household. Its adjustment may be made with facility as the construction is simple and the operation is not complicated. There are few parts'to get out of order, thus rendering the device advantageous from a practical stand point.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described,
and in combination, a base or support, a plu-' rality of seat sections or members pivotally mounted thereon, and a back member or section slidably mounted between said seat sections, and means for holding it in its raised positions, either of said seat sections being adapted to be raised on its pivot to serve as the back for the other seat section to provide a single seat, said seat sections being adapted to move to their lowermost positions on their pivots with the back section in its raised position to provide two seats, one on either side of said back section.

In a device of the character described, and in combination, a base or support, a plurality of seat sections or members pivotally mounted thereon, and a back member or section slidably mounted between said seat sections and means for holding it in its adjusted positions, said holding means including extensible side portions, the ends of which are adapted to rest upon said seat sections or members.
8. In a device of the character described,
and in combination, a base or support, a
plurality of seat sections or members pivotally mounted thereon, extensible members provided on each seat section and having means for holding them in their extended positions, said holding means including extensible side portions the ends of which are adapted to rest upon the ends of said seat sections or portions, and means adapted to engage said seat sections or members to hold them in various positions relative to said base or support.
