To ZZ w/zom, '15 may concern Be it known that I, JosnrH Nmm'rn, a subject of Francis Joseph, Emperor of Austria and Apostolic King of Hungary, residing Vat the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Guards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure l is an elevational view of my new hat-pin guard, the same being shown in operative position on a hat-pin; Fig. 2 is a similar view somewhat enlarged, the hat-pin being broken away; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through my new hat-pin guard; Fig. 4e is longitudinal seo tional view through my new hat-pin guard on approximately line 4%, Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on line 5-5, Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a transverseV sectional View on line 6-6, Fig. 2; and Fig. 7 is a front end view of my new hat-pin guard.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hat-pin guards and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful device or article of manufacture adapted to removably inclose the pointed or sharpened end of a hat-pin or the like when in use and thereby not only obviate the possibility of personal injury from or by the pin when in operative position in a hat or the like, but also prevent the accidental or surreptitious withdrawal of the pin fro-m such position, the objects of my invention being to provide a device of the kind stated of simple, cheap construction and which may be readily, easily, and quickly placed into, and, when desired or necessary, removed from, operative position upon or in engagement with a hat-pin or the like, and to improve generally upon articles of the kind described.

With the aboveV objects in view, my invention resides in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, A indicates the body portion of my new hat-pin guard, which is in the form preferably of an elongated metallic shell or casing having a preferably rectangular rear wall 1, a. substantially flat somewhat tapering top or upper wall 2, a lower or bottom wall having a fiat portion 3 and an upwardly inclined Specification of Letters Patent.

tapering portion 3, and tapering side walls H, sald upper, lower, and side walls mergingat their forward end into an outwardly flaring circular pin-opening 5 of suitable diameter leading into the interior of shell A. adjacent the under face or surface of its top wall 1, as shown particularly in Figs. l and 7.

Arranged within shell or casing 1 is a pin guide-member preferably integrally comprising a portion 6 extending lengthwise with and upon lower wall portion 3, a flanged upwardly projecting portion 7 fitting against rear wall 1 and centrally cut away at its upper end to provide a recess or groove, as at S, in ali nement with opening 5 of casing or shell A, a portion 9 extending obliquely upwardly adjacent lower wall portion 3', and an extension l() projecting forwardly within the tapering portion of casing or shell A and provided at its forward end with a rearwardly bent portion 11 centrally cut away to provide a recess or groove, as at 12, also substantially in alinement with pin-opening 5 of shell A. Adjacent its rear end and also adjacent one of said side walls 4i, as shown particularly iu Fig. 2, top or upper wall 2 of casing or shell A is provided with an elongated slot in which movably lits the bight 13 of a spring-depressing member B substantially U-shaped iu cross section, one leg thereof, which we will call its upper leg 1li, lying outside of shell A and extending substantially iiatwise relatively to top or upper wall 2 and the other or lower leg thereof 15 lying within shell A and similarly extending substantially flatwise relatively to top or upper wall 2 thereof. interposed between lower leg 15 of member B and portion 6 of said pin guide member is a coiled spring or the like 16 adapted normally to maintain said member B in outermost position with the upper face of its lower leg 15 fiatwise against the lower face of top or upper wall 2. As shown particularly in Figs. et and 5.v one end of spring 16 is preferably suitably attached to lower leg 15 of member B to maintain said parts in operative relation within shell A.

In operation, when it is desired to arrange my new hat-pin guard in operative position upon a pin or the like P, upper leg 14 of member B is first engaged by a thumb or finger to resiliently depress its lower leg 15 away from wall 2. Pin P, being then inserted into shell A through opening 5, will be guided by said alining grooves 8 and 12 of said guide-member to between said leg l5 and wall 2.V Member B being` then released, said lower leg 15 will, under the resiliency of spring;` 16, cooperate with wall 2 of shell or casing A to frictionally engage the pin P therebetween, my new hat-pin guard being thereby removably held in operative position upon the pin.

TWhile l have herein shown and described iiiy new pin-guard iii connection with a hatpin, and for which use it is especially designed and adapted, yet it is to be understood that it may equally well be employed in connection withscarf-pins and the like and that minor changes in the construction, ar 'angenient, and combination of the several parts thereof may be made and substi- V tuted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle oi? my invention.

Havingthus described my invention, what I claim and desire to sec-ure by Letters Patent is:

l. In a device of the kind described, an elongated casing having a pin-opening at one end, the upper wall of said casing, being provided with a slot, a substantially U- shaped member having its bight movably `icittin'o' in'said slot and its le's dis osed on i opposite sides oi' said wall, and a spring interposed between the opposite wall of said casing and the lower leg of said member, the lower leg of said member being adapted to cooperate with the upper wall of said casing to rictionally engage a pin or the like Vtherebetween; substantially as described.
