BnAUJoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident oi Canaan, in the county of Litchlield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Pcnholder or Pencil Brace, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to stationery and has particular reference to means for use in connection with pen holders, pencils or the like, and serving to break up the tiresome and objectionable finger movement that is acquired and used so genera lly, especially by children ljieginning to learn to write.

Among the objects of this invention, therefore, is to provide a simple, comfortable and reliable means to cause or compel a writer to adopt the desirable muscular or i'ull-arm movement in writing as distinguished from the aforesaid linger movement.

The foregoing and other objects of the invention will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the drawings lorn'iing a part of this specification in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improvement in use; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, certain parts being in section; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device complete but separated from the holder.

This device, as illustrated, comprises two principal parts, namely, a sleeve 10 adapted to be fitted to a pen holder or pencil P and having an integral shank 11 extending substantially at a right angle to the axis of the sleeve, and the other part of the device cornprisesahollow cylindrical hub 19 adjustably mounted upon the rear end of said shank 11 and having an integral finger 13 arranged at an oblique angle to the axis of the hub 12 and adapted to lie in the plane of the pen holder or to extend at an angle to said plane on either side thereof.

I wish it to be understood that while I show a pen holder and may refer to the same for convenience in this description, such term may be interpreted as broad enough to cover a pencil or any other analogous device.

, As illustrated, the device is so adjusted to the pen holder as to come or extend with the hub portion 12 within the hand so that while the pen holder properly held between the thumb and the first two lingers and the hand lusting lightly upon the last two lingers, the linger 13 of the brace will rest substantially against the hand between the second thumb joint and the third joint ol the index linger. As shown in Fig. l, the hand may assume its proper and easy position, with the wrist clear and tree from the table, and in such position the pen and hand may be exercised lreely by the full arm movement. The brace serves, therefore, to still'en the lingers and defeat or break up the undesirable linger movement.

As above premised, the device is adjustable to any size lingers or hand, the sleeve 10 being adjustable around as well as along the pen holder P and secured in adjusted position by a set screw 10. The hub 12 and linger l3 likewise are variously adjustable lirsl toward or from the pen holder along the shank 11 so as to increase or decrease the distance between the thumb and the pen holder, and also around the axis oi the shank for the purpose of varying the inclination of a linger to the plane determined by the pen holder and the axis of the shank. .lt Follows, therefore, that the device is not only adjustable to different sizes ol hands, but also to a left as well as a right hand. The finger and hub are locked in adjusted position with respect to the shank by means of a set screw 14.

A device made in accordance with this invention may be at any suitable material such as, for instance, aluminum, hard rubber, or any other preferably light material, but in this regard, as well as the general form or design of the improvement, I do not wish to be unnecessarily limited.

The combination with a pen holder, oil. a sleeve movable along or around the holder, means to secure the sleeve in any desired po sition, a shank extending from said sleeve substantially at a right angle to the axis thereof, a hollow cylindrical hub adjustable around and along said shank, means to secure the hub in position on the shank, and a linger formed integral with and extending at an angle from said hub, substantially as set forth.

2. In a device ol. the character set forth,

the combination of a sleeve, a shank formed integral with said sleeve and extending at a right angle therefrom, a set screw carried by the sleeve, a hub adjustable alongand around said shank, a set screw carried by the hub and serving to lock the same in adjustecl position upon the shank, and a finger formed integrally With said hub and extending therefrom at an oblique angle from the axis of the hub and inclined toward the axis 10 of the sleeve, substantially as set forth.
