Be it known that I, JOHN L. FORD, a citizen of the United States, residingat Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brush-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toV brush handles;-
and it has for its object the provision of a handle of this character which may be adjusted to different positions upon the brush head and arranged thereon so that-when a particular surface of the head is worn the head may be quickly adjusted so as to eX- pose a new surface.
Another object ofthe invention is the provision of a handle which may be securely connected with the head and posi- Y tively held against lateral movements thereon while the brush is inuse. Y Another object of the invention is the provision of a brush handle which may be 1 used in connection with a brush head having angularly disposed surfaces which are adapted to mutua ly assist in the action of d similar surfaces of the handle and thereby in section.
While it is to be understood that the handle is to be used in connection with a brush head of any suitable conguration where angularly-disposed side surfaces-will be presented, it is described that the brush headl A illustrated herein is of rect-angular configuration, so as to present straight angularly disposed side surfaces B. The head as designedl herein is lprovided with bristles C, which may be of any suitable Well known construction L The handle 1 is provided with a horizontally-disposed gripping portion 2 which terminates in an angularly disposed branch 3 having an integral flange arm` 4, which is preferably disposed in parallel relation with the gripping portion 2 and arranged to lie in mutualV contact with the upper flat surface of the head A. The branch 3 is provided with depending flanges 5 which are collectively associated in substantially V- form, yso as to accommodate themselves to adjacent surfaces Bof the brush head at any corner of the latter. In this manner it 1s evident that when the flanges 5 are e11- gaged against two adjacent surfaces B of the head, the handle will be securely held against. lateral movements. j
The arm 4L is provided with an elongated slot 6, and as illustrated the brush head is provided with a centrally located screw 7 having a flat washer 8 thereon and a clamping winged nut 9, the latter being disposed above the arm 4- as illustrated. The screw 7 rises from the head A being extended through the slot 6 of the arm l and arranged so that the handle may be slidably moved Vacross the head A and then rotated around the axis of the screw 7 and then subsequently adjusted at'any desired corner of the head A so as to bring the anges 5 of the branch 3 into mutual contact with two adjacent surfaces B of the brush head. After this operation, the winged nut 9 may be adjusted to a clamped position so as to force the under surface of the arm t in effective frictional contact with the upper surface of the head A. The brush head is then securely held in place upon the handle and the latter is positively held against movements in any direction.
Now thatthe details of construction of the device are Vclearly described, it is seen that when one corner of the bristle surface C is worn, the head A may be adjusted, so as to expose a new surface, and, as a consequence, all of the corner surfaces may in time be presented, so that the bristle surface may be preserved and the brush thereby made to wear equally throughout the length of the bristles.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as claimed.
