Description

J. H. WOOD. I CHIMNEYPBOTECTOR. APPLICATION FILED T11R25! 1913.
1,072,199 Patented Sept. 2, 1913.
JAMES HOMER WOOD, O1? CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CHIMNEY-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2, 1913.
Application filed February 25, 1913. Serial No. 750,585.
To all whom, it may concern:
lie it known that I, J AMES IloMna \Voon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city (if Chicago, county oi. (look, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and uselul lmprovemcnts in Chimneylrotcrtors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chiumey protcctors, and the object ol this imprm'cmcnt is to provide a device ol the character mentioncd, the base and sides of which are formed of an ii'ltegrral piece of sheet metal with the end portions double seamed thereon, and which is adapted to ell'cctively stop rain, snow, sleet and the like from entering a root' along the sides of the chimney.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinal'tcr described and claimer'l.
The invention will be best umlcrstoml by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of thisspecilieation, and in which,
Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of a root having two chimneys equipped with my improvement, Fig. 2 is a View, in perspective, of the integral :t'oot member and sides of a device embodying my invention, and Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the end portions used in the construction.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises a foot member 5 formed of a rectang'ular piece of sheet metal. When the protector is used at the comb of the roof thefoot member 5 isbent in the central portion, as indicated in Figs. 11 and 2, and when used on the side of the roof, the side portions (3 are bent to conform with the angle of the roof, as indicated in Fig. l. The sides (3 are cut out and struck up from the foot portion 5, as will he clearly understood upon reference to Fig. 52. End portions 7 are cut out and struck up from flat pieces of sheet metal and adapted to fit the foot member 5 and sides The portions of the side members 6 and end member 7 which engage are provided with their edges bent forming double seams in order to make a tight joint therebetween.
W hen V the device is used at the comb of the roof, ears 8 are formed near the apex of the foot member 5 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 to prevent the central portions of the end members .7 from moving inwardly into the opening left by cutting out thcside portions (3. When the device is used on one side of the roof an ear 8' is formed on the foot member 5 substantially as indicated by the dotted lines 8 in Fig. l. The top portions of the side members 6 and end member 7 are provided with lips 9 turned.inwardly and adapted to engage the mortar between the bricks in the chimney, as clearly illlls:
tratcd to prevent moisture from passingbetween the tops of such sides and ends, and the chimney.
While 11 have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into cll'ect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit ol the inventions I, thcrcl'ore, do not wish to'hc limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and mmlitications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
.ll aviug dcscrihed my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
A device of the kind described comprising a Foot member; sides cut out and struck up from said foot member; ends secured to said side" members; and ears on said foot member spacing the central portions of said ends apart, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
\Vitnesses:
