Description

N. PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASKIN proved nail-puller, as hereafter described.
'foot-piece O by illilild ,gligg Y stent Letters Patent1 No.`107,121, dated September 6, I870.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAIL-EXTRACTOR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE C. TAFT, of the c'ity and county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usel'ul Improvements in Nail-Fullers; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact dcscriptionof the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part ci' this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a perspective view proved nailfpuller, and
Figure 2 represents a `central vertical section of the same.
To enable those skilled iu the art to Ywhich my inoi' my imvention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more iu detail. e
The nature of my invention consists in an iin- In the drawing- Tue part marked A is' the hand-lever, the lower end of which i'rins the rear jaw B.
C is the foot-piece, and
D the front jaw.
The lever'A passes through and is pivoted to the the pivot-pin a, sucient space heilig allowed between the parts to permit free action 'oi' the lever A and foot-piece C.
'lwo holes, b b, are formed through the lever A, so that it can be adjusted t0 different positions by removing the pivot-pin a, and resetting it in the diii'erent holes b. l
The front jaw D is secured in the forward end of the foot-piece C, where it is held securely in place by a wedge, E, as shown in the drawing,'and, it will be observed, thejaw D can readily be adjusted out or in by loosening the'wedge E.
It will be observed by those skilled in the art to ol the same which my invention belongs, that, by making the jaws B andA D adjustable, they can at any time be set out, to compensate for the wearing away oft-heir points, F and G,`with use, and may, also, be adjusted to pull nails ot' dilerent sizes' with greater facility than the ordinary pullers, inasmuch as the jaws, when properly adjusted, will grasp the nail-heads of' the nails with a firm, square h'old, and are, therefore, less liable toslip off.
The operation is as follows:
The points F G of the jaws B D are inserted at opposite sides of the nail H, and are driven into the wood suiiciently f ar to allow them to embrace the nail-head. The operator then draws back the top end of lever A, while the heel I of the foot-piecel O, which rests upon the board, acts as a fulcrum, and causes the jaws D and B to embrace and iirinly grasp the nail-head,and, also, at the same time, to swing upward, which latter motion draws the nail from the wood with ease and dispatch.
I am aware that the leverA has been provided with aja-w sliding upon it, so as to be adjustable up and down.v This l do not claim, as, by making the footpiece adjustable on the lever, I am enabled to make the jaw and lever in one piece.
`What, therefore, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
A nail-puller, composed lof' the jaw and lever A B, made in one' piece, the vibrating and adjustable footpiece C, and the adjustable jaw D, held in said footpiece, said parts being constructed and arranged for joint operation, as shown and set forth. GEO. (l. ,TAFIX Witnesses:
