OLIVE-R Rock, or HUDSON,l MASSACHUSETTS.
Leners Pawn No. macadam@ May 31, 1870.
'Ile Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom yit may concer-n:
Be it known that I, OLIVER ROCK, of Hudson, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, .have invented an Improved Shoemakers Hammer; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part'of this specification.
lhe figure representsa perspective view of my invention.
This invention consists in providing the socket iu which vthe handle is secured with a projection on the side on which leverage is exerted when nails are drawn.
The details of construction and method of operation will be more fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing'-` A represents the hammer,wl|ich is provided with the curved end B and head (l, of the usual form.
D D represent extracting-claws on the edge of head G.
E represents, the socket, in which the handle is placed, which socket is on the opposite side from claws D, and is provided on its lower `side with projection F.
It is well known that shoemakers attach the sole of a boot or shoe to the last before pegging with two or more -tacks or nails, which must be withdrawn when the pcgging is completed, for which purpose it has A been the usual practice to employ a pair of pincers,
making it necessary .to lay down the pegging-hammer and 4take up the piucers,'and involving a loss of time.
By the use of my hammer the tacks can readily b e withdrawn by the claws Dy D, while the projection F supports the handle at the point of the greatest strain, and prevents breakage of the same.l
I am aware that it is no new thing to provide a hammer-head with claws similarly placed to those marked D, and this feature l disclaim. My socket E, provided with the elongated lower side F, di'ers from ordinary sockets in this, that it is furnished with a support for the handle at the only point where such a support is needed, and is devoid of elongations on the other sides; hence my hammer is cheaper of construction than one whose socketl has sides all of equal length, and just as eiicient in operation.
Having thusfnlly described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hammer-head A, when provided with the elongated lower side F, in the 4manuel-and for the purpose specied.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciiication in the presence of' two subscribing witnesses. h.
