IMPROVEMENT IN SHOEIVIAKERS TOOLS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J. A. OLIPPINGER, of Newton, in the county of Jasper, and in the Stateof Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ShoemakersTools; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.v

The nature f my invention consists in the construction of a tool to be used by shoemakers, and in the arrangement of the devices hereafter set forth and explained.

In putting the iinishing touches upon boots and shoes, there is a large number of tools needed, which have to be constantly changed, causinga considerable loss of time and annoyance to the workman, as well as` a considerable expense in procuring his outt.

In order to obviate these diiculties, kin my invention I have combined. a considerable number of these toolsin one, requiring nothing more than a few turns of a screw in order to change it from one tool to another.

Letter A represents-the handle of my tool, which may be constructed of either wood or metal.

Secured to the end of this handle, by any suitable device, is the frame B, which has au elongated slot cut through its centre, and a screw, C, remaining stationary in its place, extending vertically through it, provided upon its top with a small thumb-screw.

Upon the front end of this frame, there is a number of small Bauges formed, at both top and bottom, those at the point d forming the forepart-irn, and those at e the shank-iron.

Moving up and down in the slot in Jthe frame, and extending to some distance beyond its front end, is the gauge-block G.

This block has an opening made through it, so as to t over the front part of the frame, and is made to move up and down by means of the screw C, which passes through itsback end, and has three or more flanges formed upon its front one. By means 'of this block being adjustable, the forepart and shank-irons can be varied and altered at will.

Upon the lower edge of the block there is a ange, c, which is used to make an elevation along the outer edge of the sole.

Inf the old forepart-irons this feature usually requires a separate tool alone, having a corresponding flange, so as to serve as a guide to keep it inline. In my tool, the forepart-iron d answers for this flange, and I am enabled to give a much better finish than can be given by the old irons.

V rIhe two iianges, o and fi, are used for finishing that part of the heel next to the upper.

The opposite end of the handle A is provided with a screw, which is made to screw into the hollow cap H, which holds the vise L rmly together. This 4cap is hollow, and has a bevelled opening in one end, through which one end of the vise protrudes.

This vise consists of two part-s, each of which has a vgroove made in its surface, into which an awl or heelwheel is intended to fit. The i'ont ends of these pieces taper towards a point, so that when the cap H is screwed into place, the bevelled opening fits upon them, and secures them firmly together.

Having thus described my invention,

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The frame B, provided with the screw C, when used substantially as set forth.

2. The gauge block G, when provided with the flanges c, t', and o, either together or separately, when used substantially as shown.

3. 'lhe adjustable gauge-block G, in combination with the forepart-iron d, when used substantially as specied 4. The cap H and vise L, when constructed substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth. 5. The adjustable gauge-block G, shank-iron c, forel part-iron (l, screw O, and frame B, when` combined and used substantially as set/forth.
