IMPROVEMENT IN BURNISHING AND FINISHING TOOLS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [65,917, dated July 27, 1875; application filed June 29, 1675.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. CARVER, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Combined Burnishing and Finishing Tool for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in combining with an ordinary burnishiug-tool used by shoemakers a marking-whee1, such as is commonly used in imparting a finish to soles and shanks of boots and shoes, for the purpose of avoiding the necessity of handling a separate tool in the operation of finishing the sole and shank. Combined with the marking-wheel is also a gage for adjusting the distance of the mark from the edge of the sole.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my combined burnisher and wheel, and Fig. 2 is a top VIBW of the same.
a represents a buruishing tool of ordinary construction, and made of polished metal, having the wooden handles 1) I). On the upper side of the tool, near each handle, is attached a marking-wheel, 0, so as to rotate freely.
At the rear of the wheel 0 is secured to the burnisher, by means of a set-screw, a slotted gage, d, having aprojection, as shown in Fig. 1. By means of the set-screw and slot the gage may be adjusted so as to regulate the space between it and the wheel as desired.
In operation the burnisher is applied to the sole and shank in the usual manner, and by simply turning the burnisher overthe marking-wheels are brought to bear alternately on either edge of the sole, without the necessity of turning the boot or shoe around or making use of a separate. tool for marking, as usually practiced.
By the use of my combined burnisher and marking-wheel I efl'ect a saving of time in the handling of the tools, as well as expense. in their manufacture-very important items in consideration of the small amount paid for finishing the soles and shanks of ancyanade JAS. W. CARVER.
