In the accompanying drawing- A is the shank of the tool, recessed upon one side, as shown, and provided with a tang, B, by which it is kattached to a suitable handle.
G is a lateral arm, formed at right angles upon the shank A to receive the adjustable cap D, and isprovided at one edge with a beveled flange or guard, E.
llhe cap D is constructed with a series et' shoulders upon its working face, and is locked in any desiredposition upon the arm C byineans of the set-screw F.
When the cap is applied to the lateral arm in the position shown in iig. l, a double-guard iron is formed, for sewed or pegged work, by means of the guard E upon the armand the guard G upon the cap, the former working between the upper-leather and-the top of the sole, and the latter against the bottom ofthe sole, while the surface H bears against. the edge of thesole in the usual manner.
- By adjusting the capthe double-guard iron is applicable to soles of any thickness.

When the'portion M is adjustedwith relation to the guard E, as shown in fig. 2, it forms` a tool for Napoleon taps upon boots and shoes, independently of the shank-iron L.
By our invention we are enabled to produce upon a single shank all the range of tools used by shoemake-rs in finishing the edges of boots and shoes from heel to toe.
The device is simple in construction, easily adjusted, and supplies the place of from forty` to sixty di'erent' sized irons and tools as theyvare known and numbered for the trade.
We are aware that edge-irons for boots and shoes have heretofore been formed with an adjnstable'cap for adaptation to the 'edges of bootI and shoe-soles; and we thereforedo not claim the adjustable cap; but
