BOOT OR SHOE TREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,514, dated November 27, 1888.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
- Be it known that 1, SAMUEL :MAWHINNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vorcester, in the county of \Vorcestcr and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot or Shoe Trees, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable persons skilled in the art to which this invention appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my present invention is to pro vide a tree wherein the sides of the foot are extended to afford a better surface along the sides of the shank and to bring the joint-line well under the counter; also, to provide for the variation required for the different sizes with out change in the leg-frame or supportingpiece, and to render the tree more perfect, desirable, and efficient for use.
The particular features of improvement will be understood from the description and claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of ashoe-tree embracing my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the upper side of the foot separately. Fig. 3 is a top view, on a somewhat larger scale, of a portion of the leg-frame or middle piece, showing the seat for the foot. Fig. 4 shows the end of the foot which matches onto the leg or frame. Fig. 5 is a section through the foot at line w on Fig. 4-. Fig. 6 is a transverse section in the direction of line pm on Fig. 1, and Fig. 7 is a longitudinal central section of the tree.
Referring to parts, A. denotes the center piece, leg'frame, or metal body, having the usual cylindrical journal, A',whereby the tree is supported in connection with the bench and jacking devices, which latter may be of ordinary construction, and are there fore not herein shown.
B indicates theback or stretcher, which may be of the usual construction and provided with suitable operating mechanism, S-sueh, for instance, as shown and described in my patent, No. 374,311, or other well-known mechanism worked by the pull-rod (J in well lrnown manner.
D indicates the foot, 15 the side plates or brasses, and F thelatch for confining the foot.
In accordance with my present invention the end of the feet, which fits against the leg-frame,
is provided with side prolongations or wings, d d, that extend rearward for some distance beyond the plane of the seat a, the inner surfaces of said wings being preferably parallel with each other, or substantially so,while their outer surfaces are in prolongation of the exterior conton r of the foot. The ends of the wings terminate on a plane or line, I, that is preferably backwardly inclined from the top to the bottom of the foot in the manner illustrated. The dovetailed foot-iron H is secured to the foot along the seat a, centrally between the wings (Z d, in the manner shown. The outer end of said foot iron terminates at a position where it will be engaged by the latch F when the foot is in working position on the legframe, thereby locking the foot in place, and said iron is also provided with a notch, 72, that engages with the latch and prevents the foot falling off when it is slipped outward for placing the shoe thereon.
The seat upon the center piece or leg-frame for receiving the foot is formed as shown in Figs. 8 and 6, the sides of the leg-frame being recessed, as at J J, or cut out to the shoulders j, for the reception of the side wings, d, leaving two parallel ribs, L L, that fit within the re cess between the side wings, d d, and support the foot laterally, the top surface of said ribs being fiat to fit against the seat a, while the surfaces 1 are inclined, so as to match or form a close joint with the line or surface I at the ends of the foot-extensions (Z. A recess is formed between the ribs l),t0 accommodate the latch F, and the inner sides of the ribs are fitted with dovetailed or under-cut guides to re ceive and guide the foot-iron H, and thereby retain the foot D in connection with the cen tcr piece or leg, while it can slide back and forth on the ribs L.
The outer extremity of the legframc at Kis preferably made the full width of the shank and to correspond with the contour thereof, while the side hrasses, the ends of which are inclined along the surface 1. to match the line I, are secured to the edges of this thin portion of the leg-frame.
The latch F is fulcrumcd on the pin m, and is provided with a counterweighted head, F, as described in my former patent, No. 374,311.
The seat a is best formed with a metal plate, Ahwhich is fitted to the recess in the foot, and
is provided with side flanges, a, that extend up the inner faces of the wings d, to protect and brace the wood of said wings, and also make close bearing-surfaces that fit against the sides of the ribs L, thus giving the foot a firm support thereon for sustaining the foot against lateral pressure, thus producing a very efiicient and desirable tree.
By making the foot with the wings or prolongations d d the joint-line I is carried to a position where it comes well under the contour of the shoe or boot, so that a smooth surface is provided along the shank to support the leather. This avoids impressing a crease into the leather when rubbing or treeing the shanks. The joint I is also carried so'far to ward the heel that ample room is afforded for variation in the contour of the foot for different sizes and for rights and lefts without the necessity of changing the contour of the center piece or at the line where the foot meets the leg-frame; hence the leg-frame can be made a fixed size, the variation for sizes and shapes being wholly provided for in the form of the foot and back piece, all starting from the given contour at the joint-line I without difficulty.
My invention is here shown applied to a tree for treeing shoes; but it will be understood that the improvement claimed is equally applicable to trees for treeing long-legged boots, the modification being required only in the shape of the leg and back of the tree.
What I claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The foot having its sides prolonged by 35 backWardly-extended wings (I d and the legframe formed at its outer end, K, the full breadth of the shank, with recesses along its sides at J for receiving said Wings, in combination with the movable back, operating-rod, side brasses, and foot-retaining mechanism in a boot or shoe tree, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a boot or shoe tree, the foot having the haokwardly-extended wings d d, provided with the metal seat-plate A having side flanges, a, that extend up the inner faces of the wings for protecting and bracing said wings, in combination with the leg-frame having a body or ribs that fit the space within said S AMUEL MAVVHINNEY.
